The Bristol Eye Hospital (BEH) at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust (UHBW) is looking to grow its talented team to drive an ambitious future vision of care across Bristol and Weston. Applications are warmly invited for a fixed-term fellowship attached to the Corneal service. The post is full-time for a period of 12 months, ideally commencing mid October 2023. The fellowship provides advanced sub-speciality training in cornea and external eye disease. The post will support a team of three corneal Consultants. The successful candidate will complement the existing Specialist Registrar and will be expected to play an active role in the running of the corneal firm. He or she will also be expected to participate in the workload of the department should the need arise. Applicants should be post-CCT (or completed if from overseas) and ideally have pre-existing corneal fellowship experience. Exceptional applicants in the final year of their local training scheme will be considered. The successful candidate will be required to be registered with the General Medical Council with a License to Practice.

Main duties of the job

  • Able to take history, examination, initiate appropriate investigations and management of all local and tertiary referral to the corneal and external eye disease service.
  • Teach the principles and practice of corneal external eye diseases to nursing, medical, undergraduate and optometric staff.
  • Be surgically competent/independent in penetrating keratoplasty and superficial/deep anterior lamellar and endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK, DSAEK and primary descematorhexis).
  • Be fully versed and competent in the management of immunosuppression for corneal and external eye disease, principally peripheral ulcerative keratitis, refractory atopic keratoconjunctivitis and vernal keratoconjunctivitis, mucous membrane pemphigoid and high risk corneal transplants.
