Are you an enthusiastic Physician Associate (PA) looking to work within a friendly city centre hospital? Are you passionate about developing your clinical skills within a diverse, supportive team? If so, we are inviting applications to join our Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Team at Bristol Children's Hospital

The successful applicant will join a dynamic and welcoming multidisciplinary team to provide care for patients and their families requiring allogenic stem cell transplant across Bristol, South West England, Cardiff and Belfast. This will include involvement in the HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) typing process, including assessing results, donor co-ordination and co-ordinating the BMT clinical patient protocol

We are mainly a malignant transplant unit, but we also undertake transplant in benign haematological diseases. We are enthusiastic about expanding our transplant indications with novel therapies in the near future (i.e gene therapies, CAR-T)

The successful applicant will be the first PA working within Bristol Children's Hospital. Therefore, alongside support from the Paediatric BMT team, they will also be supported by our Lead PA at Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) and join our wider PA team across UHBW. This includes involvement in our trust wide weekly teaching and support in line with our UHBW PA development programme

Applicants must hold a qualification in Physician Associate Studies and be listed on the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register

Main duties of the job

  • Examination and clinical assessment of healthy related donors and patients to assess fitness for donation or transplant with appropriate escalation if required
  • Bone marrow aspirate, biopsy and harvest, lumbar punctures (training available)
  • Skin biopsy
  • Organisation of central line insertion
  • Collating the patient transplant protocol and the schedule for the transplant conditioning
  • Updating the referral meeting excel spreadsheet
  • Leading the referral meeting
  • Communicating with Anthony Nolan and other registries, virology, Stem Cell lab, other labs
  • Present new referrals in the BMT MDT
  • HTA (Human Tissue Agency) referral for the sibling donors
  • Explain the bone marrow procedure and consenting of patients
  • European BMT and JACIE consenting
  • Participate in the relevant MDTs/meetings
  • When prescribing rights are attained, prescribing pre-admission prophylactic drugs
  • Cross site co-ordination and chasing of results from partner referral sites (Oxford, Cambridge, Southampton, Belfast, Cambridge)
  • Chasing of clinical results and escalation of abnormal results (i.e echo,. ECG, CT reports etc)
  • Pre-transplant workup including requesting and taking of blood tests in accordance with agreed timelines
  • Involvement in research trials
  • Teaching for nurses and doctors in training
  • Clinical audit (BMT and JACIE related) and departmental projects
  • Review and updating of BMT guidelines and SOPs alongside MDT
  • NO on calls
