Job summary

Do you want to be part of the future of Healthcare in the NHS?

Whether you have already started on this career path as a service engineer, or enjoy a practical, problem-solving hobby and want to develop further, we have training and job opportunities for you.

We offer a dynamic environment and the space to go beyond your comfort zone to grow both personally and professionally.

The Clinical Engineering department is looking to recruit self-motivated Clinical Engineers to join the busy and enthusiastic Clinical Engineering team in maintaining and repairing specialist equipment used to diagnose, treat, and support patient care. On the job and relevant academic training will be provided and study time will be allowed to support completion of relevant qualifications.

You must be able to demonstrate a high level of manual dexterity in using a range of engineering tools and test equipment. The successful candidate will demonstrate a flexible and adaptable approach to working in both a clinical and workshop environment. Experience in fault-finding techniques of electrical and electronic equipment is desirable and an ability to work with IT systems would also be an advantage.

During the training programme you will be supported to develop a range of practical and problem-solving skills enabling you to undertake maintenance and repair work on a wide range of Medical Equipment. This will include acceptance testing of new equipment, routine servicing, and breakdown maintenance.

Main duties of the job

There are two levels of access to this role depending on your previous qualifications and experience.

Band 5 Qualified Clinical engineer:

You will be qualified to HNC level electrical and electronic engineering, BEng/BSc in Medical Engineering or similar. You will also have experience working in medical equipment service and repair. You will undertake a training program to develop your skills and competencies as required.

Band 4 Trainee Clinical engineer:

Entry at Band 4 will be considered where the candidate has no practical experience or insufficient qualifications. In this case upgrade to band 5 usually takes 1 year. You may be a recent university graduate without experience in the medical field, or looking for a career change. You may be part way through a recognised college course or qualified with a suitable level 3 qualification already. Possibilities exist to continue your academic progress through day release at a local college to a level 4 Engineering qualification. This is a full-time post however; you will have 1 day per week protected study leave once the course begins. Prior to the course starting in house training in technical skills will be undertaken within the various engineering teams within the BRI and other Clinical Engineering workshop locations. Training will consist of a combination of external training courses, shadowing senior staff and internal training courses.
