Job summary

Our Intensive Care Unit has a dynamic, collaborative and effective MDT approach to patient care. The specialities that we manage include hepatobiliary, upper gastrointestinal, gynae-oncology, urology, maxilla-facial patients together with emergency medical and surgical admissions.

We have our own patient gym to actively rehabilitate patients. Our pro-active research team co-ordinate the departments involvement in a number of national trials.

You will be an enthusiastic, innovative and self -motivated individual who is passionate about providing high quality care to all. Delivering safe, high quality and effective patient care that is responsive to the needs of our patients and their families.

We will provide a dynamic environment for learning and professional development. Supported by an enthusiastic Senior Management Team, the unit is responsive to speciality modernisation programmes at local network and national network levels. We offer an induction programme, supported by our clinical practice development facilitator.

Applicants must have:

A relevant first degree (undergraduate), or equivalent level of education and experience

ENB 100 or equivalent specialist critical care course qualification

Preferred is an NMC recognised Practice Supervisor qualification

Main duties of the job

To be an integral part of the critical care team. To facilitate improvement in the quality of healthcare for patients. To help provide a conducive working and learning environment, supporting and educating junior staff. To support the senior sister to promote evidence based nursing practice within the ward. The post holder will be expected to actively involved in the provision of exemplary care with the department, in accordance with the Trust strategy and vision.

Key Tasks:

To provide high quality, research based, nursing care that is patient and family focused.

To act as an advisor and role model to less experienced nurses, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated.

To support the senior sister in the management and facilitation of the development of staff creating an effective team.

To take responsibility for identified management/professional/clinical areas and projects under the direction of the senior ward sister.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

1 Clinical

1.1 To ensure high quality, research based, individualised patient care is maintained at all times.

1.2 To provide a problem solving approach to patient care

1.3 To work effectively and collaboratively on discharge planning with all members of the multidisciplinary team and interested agencies

1.4 To act as an advisor and role model to less experienced staff.

1.6 To support the clinical governance processes at department level ensuring the quality of the fundamental and essential aspects of care including use of Essence of Care Benchmarking.

2 Managerial

2.1 To work with the senior sister to ensure the efficient use of allocated resources.

2.2 To ensure the effective utilisation of staff.

2.3 To support the senior sister in managerial issues, taking the lead for agreed areas and projects.

2.4 To support Individualised Performance Review and objective setting for staff, identifying training and development needs.

2.5 To ensure clinical and managerial records are maintained in accordance with current guidelines.

2.6 To ensure that the environment and staff comply with Health and Safety, infection Control and COSHH regulations and that Trust policies and procedures are followed correctly.

2.7 To promote excellent communications within the department and multidisciplinary team and to be responsible for appropriate communication structures being in place.

2.8 To ensure that incidents and accidents are reported according to Trust policy and that appropriate clinical risk management structures are in place developing action plans and demonstrating evidence of resulting practice development.

2.9 To promote a culture that anticipates and addresses any patients concerns before they become a complaint.

2.10 Investigate complaints; prepare responses and action plans, implementing actions as agreed.

2.11 To act as a change agent to promote innovation ensuring practice developments are evidence based.

2.12 To encourage staff and maintain high standards of personal and professional conduct and performance, participating in the disciplinary procedure according to Trust policy.

2.13 To be aware of the broader Trust wide issues and resources, work as part of the managerial team of the care group.

2.14 To effectively manage the department environment ensuring that there is appropriate liaison with other departments and good utilisation of resources.

2.15 To utilise supernumerary time to further develop the nursing team, to identify ways of improving service delivery
