Job summary

We are excited to offer this opportunity within the well-established oncology pharmacy team at Royal Surrey Cancer Centre. The primary aim of this post is to perform the role of pharmacy lead for the breast cancer clinical team, working closely with the MDT in a clinic setting and on the development of treatment protocols and algorithms. The role will also include contributing to the delivery of the specialist clinical pharmacy service across the cancer centre.

The successful applicant would join an experienced team of specialist pharmacy staff who provide a comprehensive service to oncology, haemato-oncology and surgical oncology patients.

The base for much of the work will be the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre. You would liaise with the team in the dispensary (RSCH Pharmacy Ltd) and the Aseptic Unit but this role does not include direct responsibility in these areas.

This post requires a postgraduate clinical pharmacy qualification and specialist experience in oncology, haemato-oncology, and palliative care. We would endeavour to support any relevant personal/career development training when in post.

Main duties of the job

Royal Surrey Cancer Centre is based within Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust in Guildford. As a regional cancer centre, there is expertise in a wide range of cancers, and services are offered to patients across Surrey and the South East. Outreach services are delivered in collaboration with neighbouring acute trusts as well as a mobile treatment unit service. The Royal Surrey SACT Protocols and Policies provide the basis for off-trial treatment. There is also a strong portfolio of clinical research.

Active member of the Oncology Pharmacy Team in delivering a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to oncology, haematology-oncology, and palliative care patients.Work as a highly specialist practitioner in accordance with objectives.Undertake a tumour site-specific pharmacy lead role depending on service need.Contribute to the development and delivery of the specialist clinical pharmacy service to oncology clinics. Train and practise as a pharmacist independent prescriber, as required, and evaluate the contribution of pharmacist independent prescribers in the Oncology Division.Contribute to the planning and delivery of advanced practice education and development for the Oncology Pharmacy Team.Contribute to the development and validation of treatment protocols and algorithms for oncology chemotherapy and supportive care regimens.Support the pharmacy set-up of oncology clinical trials.Support the provision of a Trust Wide Medicines Management service.

As a Cancer Centre, RSCC serves a population of ~3 Million patients, of all tumour sites, from across Surrey and the South East.Work with the Deputy Chief Pharmacist Cancer, Aseptic and Research Services (CARS) to provide pharmaceutical input into the management of oncology and haemato-oncology medicines.Responsible for the line management of junior pharmacists and day-to-day supervision of junior pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other pharmacy staff.Contribute to the implementation of protocol guidelines, specifying drug doses and clinical details required for the safe administration of chemotherapy drugs for all tumour sites treated at RSCC, i.e. breast, colorectal & and gastro-intestinal, lung, gynaecological tumours, urological tumours, brain, head & neck tumours and haematological malignancies.

  • Master's degree in pharmaceutical science or equivalent plus a higher qualification in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experience
  • Postgraduate Pharmacy Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Registered Pharmacist with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Formal postgraduate training in oncology and/or haemato-oncology or equivalent experience gained through a number of short courses and experience
  • Qualified non-medical prescriber (NMP) or willingness to undertake this training
