Lung Navigator (Cancer)

Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, organised individual with a calm and methodical approach to join our highly successful Respiratory team at the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The Navigator for Lung Cancer will ensure that the entire pathway is co-ordinated efficiently and effectively, patient pathways are actively tracked to meet cancer waiting times standards, whilst supporting the collation of evidence and data for national peer review, Trust finances and medical publication. The postholder will be a first point of contact for patients ensuring they understand what the next steps entail concerning appointments and diagnostics.

The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal skills in order to work in collaboration with all members of both internal and external healthcare teams and have a flexible approach to the role. Knowledge of medical terminology especially relating to cancer is essential. Previous Respiratory knowledge and experience would be an advantage.

Main duties of the job

The Patient Pathway Navigator will ensure that the lung pathway is efficient and effective by tracking patients to ensure national cancer waiting times standards are met, supporting with the collection of data for national audits (NLCA) and medical publications.

This position sits within Medicine but will work closely with cancer services MDT Coordinators to understand patient pathways and support patients to engage with appointments and investigations whilst working with clinical and administrative colleagues to identify and address potential pathway issues and improve patient experience.

Coordinate patient pathways, NHS and private care, with high functioning planning and organisational skills.

To track and expedite patient pathways to ensure cancer waiting times standards are met, addressing causes of potential breaches and escalating concerns as appropriate.

Responsible for administrative tasks involved in managing lung cancer pathways.

Responsible for day to day management, organisation and delegation of relevant tasks and roles to others as appropriate, and as part of pathway management.

Responsible for data management relating to international web based robotic database and in house database.

Responsible for liaising diplomatically with different departments to influence and improve patient pathways and patient experience.

  • Excellent IT skills - word, email, excel, PowerPoint.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the NHS with an understanding of NHS processes and patient pathways
  • Experience of communicating with, influencing and relating to different professional groups and managers at all levels of seniority
