Job responsibilities
Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of all work, processes and procedures undertaken within the aseptic services department, other areas of Pharmacy and related disciplines.Propose and implement procedural changes within own area of expertise.Responsible for keeping all aseptics and rotational staff informed of developments within the department.Responsible for collating and reporting workload statistics, errors and performance markers, which are reported to the Aseptic Services Manager on a monthly basis.Responsible for handling verbal complaints and contributing to written responses to complaints.Co-ordinate the permit to work system for external contractors to ensure that they have received the necessary training or supervision when entering the cleanroom or undertaking work affecting the cleanroom.Propose, approve and implement all new procedures and changes to existing procedures within the department.Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of all work, processes and procedures undertaken within the aseptic services department, other areas of Pharmacy and related disciplines.Propose and implement procedural changes within own area of expertise. Sign off records of evidence for pre-registration pharmacists and NVQ trainees ensuring the evidence produced is valid.Assist with training in aseptic technique for new staff and supervise newly validated staff during aseptic production if required.Supervise the validation work of other Aseptic staff as necessary.Undertake certificated training each year to be able to final check and deliver intrathecal chemotherapy to wards in accordance with hospital policy.Ensure process validations including sterility and decontamination validations are undertaken as necessary.Successfully complete accreditations for in-process and calculation checking of aseptically prepared products. Successfully complete accreditations for the final checking and release of aseptically prepared products. Undertake Continuing Professional Development and keep up to date with current legislation and best practice in the specialised field of Aseptic Services.Interpret prescriptions and intervene regarding dosing, routes of administration, timescales, methods of drug delivery and appropriateness of treatment.Be responsible for in process checking of aseptically prepared products having undergone the appropriate accreditation.Ensure products are prepared in a timely manner in order to meet agreed turnaround times for wards and external customers. Prioritise workload accordingly.Responsible for the safe and accurate preparation of aseptic products as required, having completed the appropriate validations.Accurately label aseptically prepared products.Pack finished products prior to distribution to ensure the prompt and safe delivery of chemotherapy and other aseptically prepared items. This will include packing items for distribution outside the hospital which may require temperature controlled transportation.Transport aseptically prepared items to wards, departments and the Guildford Nuffield Hospital as requiredResponsible for the final check and release of licensed aseptic products, having completed the appropriate accreditation, providing high quality, sterile products in a ready to use form.Contribute to the maintenance of the Site Master File.Undertake reviews of published data to support the formulations and expiries used for products manufactured by the aseptic unit. Use this information to create and authorise Drug Stability Reviews.Approve aseptic manufacturing worksheets, including those for investigational medicinal products.Responsible for ensuring that all environmental monitoring and cleaning is performed and documented and that out of specification results are acted upon immediately and managed appropriately.Manage the revision and distribution of worksheets, logs.Enforce the hospital intrathecal policy and other hospital policies for aseptically prepared drugs.Act as the department stability expert, providing advice on availability, stability and compatibility of aseptically prepared drugs.As part of the final check / release role ensure environmental monitoring, cleaning and operator validations have been undertaken. Take action to resolve any out of specification results before products are released.Dispense medicines for inpatients, outpatients and private patients according to departmental procedures to provide a safe, accurate and timely service.Receive prescriptions and take prescription monies when necessary.Counsel patients on their medication.Advise patients on methods of payment for prescriptions and dispensary waiting times.Transfer and dispense controlled drugs ensuring all legal documentation is completed.Dispense batched cytotoxic products to patients and departments. Maintain distribution records to ensure traceability of these products.
