Royal Surrey Cancer Centre is based within the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust Hospital. The unit was established in 1996, under the name of St Luke's Cancer Centre, and serves a population of approximately 1.2 million across Surrey and West Sussex. It is highly regarded for the excellent care it provides and for its work with the University of Surrey and major pharmaceutical companies in conducting vital research to support the development of new cancer treatments.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the existing Malignancy of Unknown Origin/ Carcinoma of Unknown primary (CUP) Clinical Nurse Specialist team. This is a new and exciting role will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients who come under the remit of a suspected cancer with Non-Specific Symptoms referred to the center from the GP, patients presenting with a Malignancy of Unknown Origin and patients diagnosed with a Cancer of Unknown Primary.

We are looking for a committed, enthusiastic, Clinical Nurse Specialist, to provide keyworker support to these patients alongside developing and expanding an already excellent service.The post holder will be expected to contribute to the strategic direction and delivery of a quality service to patients and lead and develop this specialist nursing service within the Trust, working as an integral part of the multidisciplinary teams.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the Oncology Service and responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients who come under the remit of a suspected cancer with Non-Specific Symptoms, Malignancy of Unknown Origin and Cancer of Unknown Primary.

The key function of the Clinical Nurse Specialist is to co-ordinate the delivery of a comprehensive NSS, and MUO/CUP Service within the Trust.

The post holder will work clinically and strategically with the local MDTs to monitor and develop policy, training and services against local and National guidelines including relevant IOG guidance and Cancer Measures.

This autonomous role will provide Care and support to patients with non-specific but serious symptoms (NSS) who are referred into the service via the GP. They will Triage all incoming referrals from primary care, perform clinical assessment including degree of frailty, obtain full medical history; and request appropriate investigations as required via Nurse led clinics (face to face or virtual).

This role will also provide Care and support to patients with a confirmed malignancy of unknown origin or Cancer of unknown Primary. These roles will involve presenting patients at NSS andCUP, MDT.

Working closely with Medicine, Oncology, surgery, clinical diagnostics and primary care to support the faster diagnosis and improve outcomes for NSS, MUO and CUP patients;

The post holder will provide expert care and positively impact the experience of patients and carers by providing high standards of clinical practice. They will be a key worker to NSS, CUP, MUO patients, supporting them and their carers and families, through the investigations process and either onward referral to site specific teams or to continue to be their key worker in the CUP service.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a high level of up-to-date relevant clinical knowledge and experience with relevant post registration training and development in cancer care. In addition the post-holder must have excellent communication and decision making skills, be able to work as part of a team, but also work autonomously with minimum supervision.
