The Royal Surrey Cancer Centre is focused on providing excellent patient pathways and patient-centred care.We strive to continuously evolve to reflect the technical advances within Radiotherapy, and work closely as a multi-professional team to achieve this. We have two Varian Halcyon units and a Varian Ethos unit, which enable us to deliver daily online adaptive radiotherapy. These units complement our four Varian TrueBeams and 3 CT Scanners across the two sites, within an Aria environment. External beam treatment planning is carried out using the Varian Eclipse system, and includes use of knowledge-based planning, autocontouring and scripting for automated workflows. We use MR imaging in treatment planning and further development of PET/CT is underway. The successful candidate will manage the planning team, initiating and leading on research and development projects to enable continuing implementation and expansion of state-of-the-art radiotherapy techniques.They will provide scientific support at the highest level for all aspects of the external beam radiotherapy service and ensure production of accurate, safe treatment plans within appropriate timescales.

Main duties of the job

The post is based in our main site at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. Guildford gives easy access to the beautiful North & South Downs Way, is an hour from the coast and has great transport links to the surrounding counties of Berkshire, Hampshire and Sussex. The city offers cultural diversity, is home to the University of Surrey and it is great place to reside and explore. On occasion, attendance at our satellite centre at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill will be required.

Essential

  • Diploma / BSc Degree in Therapeutic Radiography / Physics or equivalent.
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council or Register of Clinical Technologists
  • Evidence of relevant post qualification training and education at MSc level or equivalent experience.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Specialist knowledge of radiotherapy techniques and methods acquired through experience and a record of continuous training and development (for example that accrued over 5 years of varied experience or equivalent significant demonstrable experience).
  • Significant experience of radiotherapy planning and understanding of underpinning theory and practice.
  • Experience of management of workload and working to tight deadlines in a pressured situation
  • Familiarity with clinical computer systems including specialist advanced 3D graphical and calculation software.
  • In depth experience of modern external beam radiotherapy techniques
  • Specialist Knowledge of clinical procedures in radiotherapy
  • Knowledge of physical and radiological anatomy and disease states relevant to Oncology practice
  • Understanding of hazards posed by and precautions needed with ionising and non-ionising radiation and electrical, material, biological and mechanical hazards
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, regulations, national standards, professional codes of practice and other guidelines.
  • Registered for Continuing Professional Development
