Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic scientist to join the research team in the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) Southern Hub as a Research Assistant.
The Southern Hub research team work alongside the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and are based on the Surrey Research Park. The research team are involved in a variety of projects currently focused on the analytical factors and clinical utility of the faecal immunochemical test, both in screening and symptomatic populations. You will be a dynamic, enthusiastic team member with a science degree and experience of the bowel cancer screening programme who is looking for a new challenge.
This post is varied and duties will include laboratory tasks, administration and data recording and analysis. You will use databases and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and will have the motivation to work to a high degree of accuracy and detail.
Training will be provided in any project-specific aspects of the role.
Main duties of the job
Assist with research and development projects and associated administrative and laboratory procedures at BCSP Southern Hub
The Research Assistant will support the BCSP Southern Hub Research team in research and development activities. They will assist with the development of project protocols and undertake research project tasks in accordance with agreed protocols under supervision of other members of the research team. Relevant training will be provided for specialist skills associated with the post.

Receive training to perform relevant research activities: good clinical practice (GCP), good laboratory practice (GLP), research project databases, advanced Microsoft office software and other relevant software, laboratory equipment use and maintenance, quality management practices and software. Communicate with research project participants by answering helpline calls and progressing queries; producing letters, both bespoke and automated, to recruit participants, inform them of results and other project related communications. Produce a detailed audit trail of research project activities. Perform and keep records of maintenance to laboratory equipment, liaise with service engineers and record service information. Monitor and maintain general supplies for the research laboratory. Monitor and maintain supplies of research office stationery and project stationery. Contribute to production of SOPs in accordance with Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Service quality management methods. Communicate with members of research project teams at other sites as directed by the research project lead. Attend BCSP Southern Hub Research Committee meetings, take and write up minutes where required. Follow established procedures for the receipt and storage of research project biological samples.
