Are you looking to join a dynamic, forward thinking department and apply your skills to a clinical setting? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Clinical Exercise Instructor to join our Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service.

This post is suitable for qualified exercise physiologist who have an interest in delivering cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation. Previous NHS experience is essential.

The successful candidate will be based with our CREST team working within the hospital and various community locations. The role will comprise of running classes for patients and conducting 1:1 assessments, as well as assisting the team with administration tasks as they arise.

Training and support will be provided to help you develop the relevant skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be working as part of an established CResT (cardiac and respiratory rehab) team working under the supervision of a band 7 Physiotherapist. They will be responsible for supporting the service. The post-holder will be expected to:

o To provide exercise prescription and delivery within the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service, as part of the multidisciplinary team without direct supervision, according to team/department standards and protocols.

o To maintain a high standard of exercise prescription for patients recovering from cardiac events or those who have long term cardiac and respiratory conditions.

Responsible for effective communication with multi- professional team members/line manager.Report to supervisor any patient problems, issues regarding clinical management of patients.Communicate effectively, sensitively and appropriately with patients (and their carers) who may have a variety of medical, psychological and social needs re Physiotherapy input including those with impaired cognitive function i.e. stroke, deaf patients.This information may be sensitive or complex as may involve discussion regarding long term health and lifestyle changes. Tact and Diplomacy will be required.

Job responsibilities

To prescribe, plan, deliver and evaluate the exercise component of the cardiac prevention and rehabilitation service, in partnership with multi-disciplinary colleagues.

The post holder will perform full exercise and activity assessment of patients, including appropriate functional capacity test, risk assessments and set individualised patient goals. They will review these goals with patients at set intervals during the course and at final review and make appropriate onward referrals. Due to the complex presentation of cardiac and respiratory patients, the post holder will have acquired knowledge in areas such as musculo-skeletal, stroke, respiratory, and cardiovascular conditions.

Throughout the programme they will monitor, evaluate, and record patient outcomes, offering advice/support, and adapting exercise prescription as clinically indicated. They will provide a high standard of care by setting individual patient centred goals based on the patients cardiovascular risk assessment.

As part of this role the post holder will provide specialist advice to other professionals and cardiac clinicians as appropriate. They will be responsible for the management of cardiac rehabilitation patients during exercise sessions.

To undertake resuscitation training in line with the latest resuscitation council (UK) guidelines and assist the Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse Specialists or Physiotherapists during any emergency situation.

To respond immediately to incidents or accidents involving patients, visitors or staff and report as required in accordance with local guidance and incident reporting policies.

To ensure patients are exercising in a safe environment and to bring to the attention of senior staff any safeguarding concerns and use own judgement in the event immediate action is required when working alone or offsite classes.

The post holder will also be responsible for entering accurate data onto the National Audit for Cardiac Rehabilitation and on local audit spreadsheet.

The post holder will be expected to work at the RSCH and at off site community leisure and gym environments.

The post holder will have knowledge of relevant national standards, policies and guidelines, and application to practice in this field

The post holder will have an understanding of the process of behaviour change and appropriate models and strategies that are used to assess a patients current state of physical activity behaviour and support change towards achieving the long term adherence to a physically active life.

  • BACPR Exercise Instructor Level 4
  • REPS Level 4 Certificate for Chronic Respiratory Disease.
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Evidence of study at degree level in Sport/Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology or other relevant subject area such as public health, physical activity, health and fitness or sport
  • Substantial practical experience and proven success in a health/sport/physical activity development post
  • Specific knowledge of exercise prescription in relation to people with complex respiratory and cardiac conditions
