Job summary

We are looking for a dynamic, flexible and highly motivated individual who enjoys working in a team and are a seeking a new challenge. The multi-specialty unit has 13 main operating theatres and 2 Day Surgery theatres performing emergency and elective procedures. We are leaders in Major Laparoscopic Surgery & Robotic Surgery with the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit an internationally recognised Centre of Excellence created for the teaching of innovative laparoscopic surgical techniques.

Specialties here include: Colorectal, Urology, Gynae Oncology, Hepatobiliary, and Upper GI, Breast Surgery, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics, Major Head and Neck and ENT, Trauma & Orthopaedics and CEPOD.We are the Regional referral centre for Upper GI work, including emergency Oesophagogastric cases.

Day Surgery is a purpose built unit covering many specialties including ENT, Maxillo Facial, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Urology, Pain and dedicated Paediatric lists.

Main duties of the job

As a Registered Nurse/ODP, you should have theatre experience in a wide range of specialties; proven experience of leading a team and be prepared to support the department during the evenings and at weekends. There is also an on call commitment with this post.

Your proven leadership and organisational skills along with your ability to prioritise and remain calm under pressure in a busy team environment will ensure you are able to demonstrate your excellent communication skills and drive to succeed. To assist the sister/charge nurse in leading the nursing team in the provision of high quality, research based, nursing care that is patient focused.

To act as a role model to less experienced nurses, ensuring appropriate care of the perioperative patient is planned, implemented and evaluated.

To support the sister/charge nurse in the management and facilitation of the development of staff creating an effective team.

To foster a multidisciplinary approach to patient care in line with Clinical Governance.

CLINICAL

o To provide high quality, research based, individualised patient care at all times.

o To provide a problem solving approach to patient care.

o To prepare the clinical environment to meet the requirements of the operating lists and anticipated workload and when on night duty unload sterile instrument container trolleys as required.

o To act as the patients advocate and give psychological support to the patient e.g. whilst in the anaesthetic room, during local anaesthetic procedures.

o To give assistance to the anaesthetist and/or the Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) whilst in the anaesthetic room e.g. the application of monitoring equipment and the positioning of the patient.

o To ensure and assist with the safe preparation of patients for operative procedures e.g. safe transfer and positioning of patients on the operating table, holding of limbs during skin preparation and draping, work with anaesthetist/ODP as and when required.

o To act as a leader, advisor and role model to less experienced staff.

o To assist in the control of cross infection by adhering to departmental policy regarding dress, the maintenance of a clean working environment, decontamination and sterilisation procedures and asepsis.

o Provide assistance in operative procedures, guiding and supporting junior staff and taking action additional to own work role, where appropriate.

o Provide immediate post-operative care.

o When on night duty, to act as a recovery nurse and be responsible for the immediate care of the post anaesthetic patient.
