Job summary

Royal Surrey Cancer Centre is the specialist cancer unit based at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust Hospital. Established in 1996 and serving a population of approximately 2 million across Surrey and West Sussex, it is highly regarded for the excellent care it provides and for its work with the University of Surrey and major pharmaceutical companies in conducting vital research to support the development of new cancer treatments.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre for a Systemic and Supportive Anti- Cancer Therapies (SACT) Co-ordinator. The post holder will hold a key role within a multi-professional Oncology services team whose priority is to Co-ordinate the provision of all systemic anticancer treatments to Cancer Centre service users, ensuring treatments are available at the point of use before their planned administration time. Communicate service related information effectively with all those involved in the chemotherapy pathway to ensure the best possible experience for patients and the most efficient service for staff. Ensuring that patients receive their treatment at their allocated appointment time. You will be responsible for liaising with the MDT to ensure that this process happens efficiently and effectively.

We are seeking a committed, dynamic, motivated individual with an interest in developing and improving Oncology services, who also has exceptional communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, along with the aptitude for working independently, to join a dedicated and cohesive team within this specialty.

The post-holder will be required to have a wide range of IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Varian Aria System Database. Previous Pharmacy and Administrative experience within an Oncology / NHS environment would be an advantage, although opportunities for personal and professional development within the role are available.

Job responsibilities

Working closely with the SACT managers for provision of SACT, using knowledge of systemic anticancer regimens and systemic anticancer prescribing systems, to co-ordinate the provision of complex SACT treatment to all Cancer care service users in the outpatient setting.

Liaise daily with multidisciplinary leads; provide them with clinic lists and planned schedules of all patients requiring SACT treatment.

Liaise with all treatment schedulers to cross check all planned SACT treatment, monitoring and resolving any related issues using own judgement, and escalating as appropriate.

Liaise with and influence all treatment schedulers and treatment prescribers to ensure patient scheduling is kept up to date and accurate by using in depth knowledge and awareness of systemic anticancer treatment.

Coordinate with all cancer care service users and ensure treatment is provided at the time required using excellent communication skills and by developing good working relationships with all departments, ensuring planning and scheduling are optimised to achieve this.

Liaise between oncology pharmacy including aseptics and treatment areas to ensure the availability and priority of SACT.

Point of contact for patients and / or representatives regarding the preparation of their systemic anticancer treatment. To communicate sensitively with patients and their relatives in a calm, courteous and reassuring manner using tact and diplomacy at all times, participate in providing information and support. Keep patients informed of issues affecting their treatment

Visit day unit/clinics early in morning to assess daily requirements of outpatient systemic anticancer therapy. Have regular contacts with Consultants, SpRs,.

Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of all work processes and procedures undertaken in the Cancer care service in the Outpatient setting.

Propose changes to departmental policies and procedure and assist in implementation of these.

Propose and implement procedural changes to the systems to prevent outpatients leaving the site without their prescribed supportive medication

Propose and implement procedural changes to systems for monitoring, managing, reporting activity in the Cancer centre

Propose and implement changes to systems to manage the delivery of SACT service

Propose and implement changes to systems to monitor and manage patient delays

Liaise with coordinator on Chilworth Day Unit at regular intervals during the day to ensure patient lists are accurate and up-to-date. Work with schedulers to monitor and report exceptions in the performance of the systemic anti-cancer service on an immediate basis.

To uphold confidentiality due to patients and relatives at all times and in all situations according to Trust policy.

Keep Oncology pharmacy service managers informed of any workload and service delivery issues as they occur.

Monitor activity levels in the Cancer Centre, report if levels affect delivery of SACT service including patient delays.

To supervise on a day-to-day basis the Chemo coordinators and Chilworth Day Unit Coordinator.

Responsible for management and storage of data reports of patients and SACT

Work with the Aria SACT data team retrieving data from Aria

To work on own initiative dealing with competing demands and prioritise own workload.

Responsible for ensuring that stationary/supplies used in the course of own work are maintained and reordered, as and when necessary.
