Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated nurse to join our screening team and work alongside our Specialist Screening Practitioners (SSP) for the national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP). The BCSP manages patients who receive a positive faecal immunochemical (FIT) test, which is currently offered to patients in the age range of 54 to 74 years, and we are imminently due to expand the service to also include 50 to 52 year olds. The programme also manages the colonoscopy surveillance pathway for Lynch syndrome patients, which can start from the age of 25.
You will be responsible for undertaking nurse led telephone/face-to-face clinics for patient assessment, provision of information and preparation of those undergoing endoscopic (or other diagnostic) investigation, and managing the patients screening pathway. You will also be working in endoscopy to support your patients during the colonoscopy procedure and populate the National screening database system.
Main duties of the job
This role comes under the governance of the National Bowel Screening Programme and is subject to significant clinical audit. You will need to have good IT skills including a working knowledge of Word and Excel. Specific training will be given on the clinical management system which underpins the screening service.
Potential candidates should have a RN qualification with relevant experience in patient assessment and/or working in endoscopy. A post qualification in mentorship, teaching or assessment is desirable. It would be an advantage to have experience in the management of colorectal disease, knowledge of the cancer patient pathway and advanced communication skills. As an independent practitioner you need to be able to manage a clinical caseload, which is target driven. You should enjoy working within an evolving service and be expected to participate in the new developments.
The role involves significant in-house training. Participation in the Screening training module at Liverpool University or University of Plymouth (40 credits at level 6) is mandatory and fully funded.
