Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow to join the Oncology team at St Luke's Cancer Centre at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. The Trust is delighted to invite an experienced or new Clinical Fellow to join our service in a fixed term - 1 year role with a possibility of extending the role to 2 years and an MD/PhD degree.

The project in development is within the chemotherapy and frailty field and working with Professor Agnieszka Michael . The postholder will be joining a team working with patients undergoing cancer treatment and will set up and run a clinical trial that will form a foundation for research into frailty and Electronic Frailty Index in cancer patients treated with chemotherapy . There will be the opportunity to work closely with the researchers from the University of Surrey and extend the project into an MD/PhD research degree. The candidate will be required to continue with clinical work (outpatients clinic) for one day a week to maintain clinical skills.

Main duties of the job

The role involves taking a clinical lead on the frailty research project and setting up a trial to evaluate electronic frailty index in patients undergoing cancer treatment. The role involves working with a team of oncologists, Data Managers, Trials Administrators, Cancer Research Network Manager and the R and D Team. The post will be closely linked to the University of Surrey's team of researchers and an opportunity to undertake an MD/PhD project in cancer and frailty, will be a part of this project. The appointee will attend a regular oncology clinic once per week and work closely with the multi-disciplinary team. Training in basic research methodology and good clinical practice will be provided.

  • Attend a minimum of one clinic per week, (subject to the relevant Royal College out of program experience guidance).

    • To facilitate clinical research in accordance with ICH - GCP
    • To work with the research team and the supervisor to build the resources required for cancer frailty research trials

Education and Training

  • Disseminate research by preparing and presenting papers and posters for meetings, conferences and publications.
  • To organise educational sessions for registrars as appropriate
  • Contribute to the Team meetings by providing educational session

Quality, Clinical Governance and Research

  • Work according to ICH GCP
  • To support the team in preparation by providing expert medial advice and guidance in a timely way to resolve any issues/queries
  • To contribute to the overall improvement of governance within the team through shared learning opportunities and supporting others to share experience
