We are looking for a dedicated Asthma CNS to join our Paediatric Department. We have the opportunity for a Band 7,one year fixed-term contract, 33 hrs pw.

You will be an enthusiastic Paediatric nurse who has the passion and knowledge to work alongside our Consultants to develop a Respiratory team. We would like to develop nurse-led clinics, work as a team to deliver teaching to Children and their families and help staff to deliver best practice respiratory care.

We are a busy general Outpatient department seeing children from 0-18yrs. We also have visiting Consultants from a variety of Tertiary centres including GOSH; Southampton; St. Georges and Evelina Childrens Hospital.

The Unit is currently supported by a range of nurse specialists including oncology, mental health, learning disability, epilepsy, diabetes, allergy, and we have a dedicated paediatric practice development nurse.

If you are a Childrens Nurse (RNC/ RSCN) with post registration experience in acute paediatrics and you have proven post registration development within Asthma; If you have leadership and communication skills, this could be the job for you.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team. Successful candidates should be prepared to support hospital staff, attend clinics and oversee care of inpatients. To work with families to ensure enhanced support and inreach into schools/ nurseries as appropriate. To attend conference and study days to keep up-to-date with current care initiatives. To develop and lead in the delivery of care whilst acting as an autonomous practitioner and a specialist nurse.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Provide professional expert clinical care and expertise within asthma services. Liaise with members of the multi-professional team both within the organisation and with external stakeholders, to ensure specialist practice is delivered both effectively and efficiently and continuity is maintained
  • Be a key contributor to the strategic development of the Asthma service taking account of government, regional and Trust initiatives. This also includes Peer Review agreements with the ICBs and the ICS.
  • Work in collaboration with medical and other multi-disciplinary staff to provide a comprehensive patient focused service.
  • Ensure nurse clinics are provided consistently and efficiently, ensuring that treatment plans are completed and using clinical judgement to request investigations and make appropriate referrals.
  • Initiate and participate in the teaching programmes of asthma within inpatient and outpatient teams.
  • To advise on the management of and facilitate early discharge for patients admitted with asthma, either following an acute exacerbation or as part of their ongoing condition; working in support with the Paediatric Consultant team. Providing educational support as required.
  • Be the focal point for inpatient referrals to the asthma team, providing first line advice to doctors from other teams.
  • In collaboration with the Paediatric community specialist nurses, provide community based care and support for specific patients with asthma following their discharge from hospital.
