Job summary

The Royal Surrey County Hospital Intensive Care Unit is continually developing its critical care service for patients, in line with national guidelines and professional body recommendations, to include clinical psychology as part of the multi professional team delivering the most up-to-date care for the acute treatment of, and rehabilitation from, all the elements of critical illness. Our aim is to provide the highest quality and best outcomes for patients being treated for and recovering from critical illness in our hospital.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary intensive care team with the aim of continuing the development of the most up-to-date evidence based critical care service to meet the psychological and emotional needs of the patients it cares for as well as those of the staff who work in this emotionally and psychologically challenging environment.

To have the following specialist knowledge, experience and skills and personal qualities to fulfil the post: Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology as accredited by the BPS or equivalence and post-qualification training in a specialised area of practice relevant to rehabilitation of patients following critical illness. Leadership qualification / evidence of formal training in leadership and formal training in supervision of other psychologists. .

Main duties of the job

Working in the Intensive Care Unit to: Identify patients at risk of psychological morbidity and plan specific interventions to maximise outcome. Formulate advice for and treat patients and relatives in relation to the clinical situation. Assess, identify and treat highly complex patients in hospital and at follow up for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress associated with their critical illness and/or ICU admission. Evaluate psychological-related research and implement evidence-based practice. Provide ongoing education and training for clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals and act as a resource for other professionals. Directly support staff and colleagues in dealing with the stressors and psychological consequences of working in a challenging healthcare environment. Link to other agencies related to patients' ongoing care post discharge.

Essential

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996 and those who trained abroad) as accredited by the BPS, or with a statement of equivalence from the BPS
  • Undertaken post-qualification training in a specialised area of practice relevant to rehabilitation of patients following critical illness
  • Leadership qualification / evidence of formal training in leadership
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the British Psychological Society and/or HCPC
  • Formal training in supervision of other psychologists
  • Willingness to undertake professional training and development

Desirable

  • Chartered Status of the British Psychological Society and/or member of the Association of Clinical Psychologists (ACP)

  • Extensive experience of working in a range of relevant specialist clinical areas, including in a senior role at band 8a
  • Evidence of specialist courses, clinical supervision and further specialist training in treating patients following critical illness or similar acute physical health problem s
  • Core experience of leadership within an appropriate specialist area
  • Experience of working in a team based within an acute hospital, with experience of working in both outpatient and inpatient settings
  • Experience of supervising qualified clinical psychologists, trainee clinical psychologists on the doctorate course and physical healthcare staff such as doctors, physiotherapists and nurses
  • Experience of managing resources and allocating these strategically to meet the various demands on/needs of the service
