Job summary
This clinical fellow post is available from February 2024 for an initial period of six months, renewable for up to 12 months by mutual agreement. Applicants can be trainees in anaesthetics or intensive care medicine, an acute medicine specialty or emergency medicine (A&E/ED); they must have experience of intensive care medicine and preferably have airway skills. They should already possess MRCP, FRCA or MRCEM as appropriate to their background.
This post, one of the first of its kind nationally, involves both clinical commitments on our intensive care unit (ICU) and a substantial commitment to acute point of care imaging. This is an exceptional opportunity to spend time with two of the country's most successful point of care ultrasound trainers, to learn from them and gain accreditations relevant to training and spend time with a radiologist highly experienced in teaching ultrasound.
Main duties of the job
You will receive training in trans-thoracic echocardiography in accordance with the intensive care society's FUSIC heart scheme (Focused Ultrasound in Intensive Care) with a view to completing the accreditation within six months. Once trained, you could gain experience through learning further echocardiography, potentially expanding to further BSE level 1 or full BSE level 2 accreditation or the new European Diploma of Echocardiography, as desired. Secondly, you would receive extensive training in point of care ultrasound with a view to completing accreditation of FUSIC lung (or to level 1 thoracic standard for RCR/BTS) and further training modules to allow full completion of the intensive care society's FUSIC scheme or the Society of Acute Medicine's FAMUS scheme (Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound), thereafter contributing to the training of their peers and refining their skills. These further modular imaging competencies offered include extended vascular ultrasound, DVT ultrasound and basic & advanced abdominal scanning and even potentially the new FUSIC HD (haemodynamics) module. Additionally we offer cross-sectional imaging teaching, neuraxial ultrasound scanning and FAST scanning for trauma. These skills will be valuable for the post-holder's future clinical practice and enhance their career prospects as highly desirable skills.

There are 28 flexibly staffed intensive care beds and dedicated isolation rooms. The unit runs at a high occupancy rate and has undergone a rapid expansion in the last five years, associated with the expansion of specialist cancer services.
