Job summary

As a registered practitioner you are personally accountable for your professional practice and have a legal/professional responsibility to service users, colleagues, employers and self.

The Derbyshire Mental Health Helpline is part of the Urgent Assessment Services Pathway and provides an all age all need 24/7 mental health support line that is operated in collaboration with VCSE partners, who provide the first line of response to callers contacting the crisis Mental Health Helpline , and work in collaboration with mental health triage practitioners. The service triages all calls to the Helpline (including from EMAS, Police and 111) to identify the most appropriate service to meet individual need when persons are experiencing a mental health crisis. This involves telephone triage, support and signposting to a broad spectrum of third sector and secondary care service, and referring on to relevant services where indicated The Service continues to develop and in April 2024 NHS 111 Mental Health press 2 was added into the service provision, resulting in all calls made to 111 requiring a mental health response, being directed to the service. In October 2024, DHcFT went into partnership EMAS to deliver their contract of a Mental Health Response Vehicle (MHRV).

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Lead role is to ensure that the method in which the service is delivered is clinically sound and to a high clinical standard, leading clinical developments and providing quality assurance. The Clinical Lead will hold oversight and leadership over clinical developments within the service to improve clinical practice and quality of care, driving for improvements in the quality of care delivered and regularly seeking information and feedback from staff members, service users, external stakeholders and relevant data (i.e. clinical audits, outcome measures, patient demographics etc) to identify any areas for learning or improvement.

The Clinical Lead is responsible for outlining what 'good' looks like in their service context, and driving practice to meet this. They should be familiar with relevant best practice standards and guidance relevant to their service. They are responsible for disseminating learning and information to staff members about these practice standards - this should be through training, advice, supervision and regular communication. They play a key role in investigating concerns around clinical practice and will hold responsibility for overseeing the delivery of clinical aspects of any areas of learning & improvement that identified. They should offer clinical guidance and support to staff members where there are any uncertainties around practice standards and clinical pathways, or in respect to particularly complex cases.

Clinical Professional Issues

To co-ordinate activities within the mental health support line call centre ensuring all team members are clear on clinical and operational policies and processes.

Ensure close liaison with CMHTs, Primary Care Teams, Inpatient Services, Social Services Departments and Non statutory Agencies.

To ensure that the Service meets its quality and performance targets as indicated in the performance metrics.

The post holder will provide a professional role model for the delivery of high quality care always acting in a person centred and enabling fashion, working in a family inclusive practice and in line with contemporary practice.

Ensure evidence based practice and research awareness is used as the foundation for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.

Promote service user and carer involvement; autonomy and choice are embedded into the philosophy of the clinical area in all aspects of care.

Ensure appropriate evidence based clinical risk assessments undertaken.

Ensure all service users, where indicated have an up to date evidenced-based care plan that meets their presenting needs and safety plans are reflected to ensure clinical teams are aware of any changing patterns of presentation and risk.
