Job summary

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (DHCFT) are looking to recruit a number of Associate Hospital Managers (AHMs) to enhance our existing team.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our panel of Associate Hospital Managers. Whilst the primary need is for DHCFT, the Trust holds Service Level Agreements with other NHS Trusts in the county and so opportunities for involvement with those Trusts will also be available.

Associate Hospital Managers cannot be employees of the Trust but are lay people from the local community who undertake specific duties laid out in section 23 of the Mental Health Act 1983.

Associate Hospital Mangers are authorised by the Trust, under section 23 of the Mental Health Act to discharge detained patients if they no longer meet the criteria for detention.

The role is voluntary, but an attendance allowance of £50 per half day session and travel expenses (if appropriate) will be paid. The majority of hearings are undertaken over MS teams, but may be held face to face at a number of delegated sites across Derbyshire. Hearings are scheduled at a mutually convenient time during the working hours of 09:00 - 16:00, Monday - Friday.

Appointment will initially be for 3 years, and this may be renewed following a 3 yearly review.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will participate in AHM hearings consisting of 3 panel members to review the care, treatment and detention of patients who are subject to the MHA at statutory intervals laid out in the MHA and at the request of the patient.

They will review written reports from healthcare professionals. and may have discussions with the patient, their legal representative, nearest relative and the clinical team .

Following the hearing the panel will discuss in private, whether the grounds for continued detention under the MHA are still satisfied. If the legal criteria are not met, the panel will discharge the patient from detention under the MHA.
