The post holder will work as part of the Derby Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service delivering recovery focused service user care. The purpose of the role is to assess and deliver specialist pharmacological interventions for drug and alcohol users requiring medical interventions for dependence.

The Specialist Substance Misuse Independent Non-Medical Prescriber acts as an advanced autonomous practitioner, demonstrating a high level of practice and knowledge whilst participating in direct evidenced based care. The post holder will be part of a multi-disciplinary team providing professional and clinical support in the care of service users with diagnosed substance misuse dependency.

The Specialist Substance Misuse Independent Nurse Prescriber role will deliver prescribing interventions for both drugs and alcohol and will facilitate this through clinic based prescribing. The post holder is responsible for undertaking initial prescribing assessments (and then ongoing monitoring and prescribing) for those who have been referred as requiring medical intervention.

The role requires the delivery of individualised prescribing interventions based on the post holders assessment (or that of another medical or other Non-Medical prescriber in case of transfer) and will have the responsibility to ensure that all prescribing (inc. controlled drugs) is undertaken in line with DHcFT prescribing policies.

The engagement with service users is essential to reduce harm and improve outcomes and will require a skilled practitioner to be able to provide this in a pro-active manner. Service users will be engaged from the Derby City area and the nurse will be expected to provide cover for colleagues where necessary.

As a senior clinician within Derby Drug and Alcohol Service the post holder will act in a managerial/clinical supervisory role, supporting the nursing team under guidance and support from the service manager.

The post holder will also support other health professionals, mentor and support Non-Medical Prescribers, supplementary prescribers and staff undergoing a non-medical prescribing course as well as providing support, guidance and training to other Derby Drug and Alcohol Service staff.
