Job summary

The Biochemistry Department is looking for suitably experienced and qualified Biomedical Scientist to join the friendly, well established team in Blackpool.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in the context of the Objectives of the Pathology Directorate and the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Biomedical Scientist in the Department of Biochemistry.

The post holder will carry out all tests and background tasks following established Standard Operating Procedures.

Additional duties will be undertaken as directed by the Head of Department in consultation with the post holder.

To ensure all requests submitted to and accepted by the department are processed in accordance with the department agreed protocols.

Plan, perform and interpret all biochemical investigations to a high level of competence.

To provide accurate biochemistry results that are entered onto the computer system and ensure they are reported accurately and timely.

To comply with biochemistry polices.

To participate in Internal and External Quality Assurance Schemes.

To ensure safe handling of hazardous and infective materials according to defined protocols

To ensure equipment is used safely and according to manufacturers guidelines.

To be responsible for the efficient and effective use of materials within the laboratory

To rotate through the sections of the laboratory to maintain skills.

To ensure equipment is used safely and according to manufacturers guidelines.

To obtain patient samples for comparison studies when required for evaluation, verification or validation.

  • oBSc Biomedical Science
  • oRegistration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Desirable

  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in Biochemistry or equivalent.

Experience

Essential

  • oExperience of working in a NHS laboratory, gained over several years.
  • oExperience of Automation techniques.
  • oExperience of accreditation systems and QC schemes in Biochemistry

Skills

  • oGood oral and written communication skills, telephone technique, client / customer liaison.
  • oGood laboratory practice, technical and organisational skills.
  • oPatient and calm, yet assertive and decisive when required.
