Job summary

The post offers a wide variety of experience in both elective and emergency Urology. The post holder will be responsible to the appropriate Consultants for admitting cases, the conduct of ward investigations and for pre and post-operative care. They will also be responsible for arranging theatre lists and will participate in operative surgery, the extent of their involvement being commensurate with experience and ability. The post holder will attend and assist at Urology Outpatient Clinics.

The post-holder will be expected to attend the rolling half days and take part in audit and case presentation. Logbooks of the surgical operations performed will be mandatory (Logbook for RCS England).

Research opportunities may be possible for suitable interested post holders.

Contractual Commitments

The post holder will be required to participate in a 1:6 on-call urology rota.

Trust Terms and Conditions of Service

The post-holder will be employed on national Terms and Conditions of Service (Hospital Medical

& Dental Staffs' Whitley Council) for the Specialty Registrar (Fixed-

Term) Grade). The salary range is between £31641 - £50068 per annum depending on previous experience

Main duties of the job

The Urology specialty provides a high-quality clinical service to patients, which encompasses effective diagnosis, treatment and post-operative care. A comprehensive range of outpatient clinics, in-patient, day case and emergency services are provided. These include:

  • Management of bladder cancer and prostate cancer.
  • Flexible cystoscopy under local anaesthetic.
  • Mobile lithotripsy.
  • Endoscopic surgery of prostate and bladder cancers.
  • Percutaneous specialist service for renal stones and renal disease.
  • Flexible ureterorenoscopy and laser stone fragmentation for renal and ureteric stones.
  • Specialist management of ureteric and renal stones.
  • Transperineal ultrasound guided biopsy of prostate
  • Bladder outflow service.
  • Intravesical chemotherapy for bladder cancer and other specialist bladder installation for specific bladder disease.
  • One-stop Haematuria clinic and Urodynamics.

The post holder will regularly attend supervised clinics, flexible cystoscopy lists, day case and inpatient lists so that the operative and management skills are commensurate with the level expected for ST3+. They will be actively encouraged to get involved in audit projects and academic work.

A comprehensive Urology service is provided for residents. The service has access to in-patient beds on a Urology surgical ward, with day case Urology patients being admitted to a day care ward.

The Urology specialty provides a high-quality clinical service to patients, which encompasses effective diagnosis, treatment and post-operative care. A comprehensive range of outpatient clinics, in-patient, day case and emergency services are provided. These include:
