Are you an enthusiastic registered nurse with Respiratory and/or Oncology experience, who wants to make a break into specialist nursing?

Led by a highly experienced team of specialist nurses, our Lung Cancer team is expanding. With the exciting addition of a nurse-led solitary lung nodule service & a growing case load, we have an exciting opportunity to appoint a Band 6 Nurse Specialist. We are seeking to offer a learning experience to a highly motivated registered nurse who is passionate and committed to delivering excellent holistic care for all patients with Lung Cancer.

We are a small team, but growing team, that provides inpatient and outpatient services for patients with lung cancer. The service provides highly specialised expert advice and support by direct involvement from pre diagnosis and for all those affected by lung cancer throughout their cancer journey.

Ideally, we are looking for a nurse who has experience working closely with patients who have cancer & respiratory conditions and have an understanding of treatment pathways and symptom management. A basic understanding of the Somerset cancer register is desirable. However, full training & support will be given to the successful applicant.

Main duties of the job

JOB PURPOSE:

  • The Associate Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist role is a highly specialised & expert role, designed to expertly assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised programmes of specialist evidence-based nursing for the lung cancer patient and their families, in collaboration with other key professionals.
  • Be responsible for ensuring high standards of holistic specialist nursing care is provided to all lung cancer patients & their carers across the Fylde Coast.
  • You must work as part of a multi-professional team ensuring patients with lung cancer receive the highest standard of care, information, and support from pre-diagnosis throughout the course of their disease.
  • You will be a role model to ward staff, patients, and the multi-professional team, demonstrating high standards of care and clinical leadership.
  • As part of the Specialist Nurse team, you will collaborate with colleagues to co-ordinate workload distribution. You will be required to practice in a self-directed manner, with confidence, authority, and expertise. You will exercise a freedom to act in the absence of & alongside the consultant teams, to direct and guide patient care and treatment, with the support of the Lead Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist & other Band 7 Nurse Specialists.

  • To provide a comprehensive & holistic assessment of patients with Lung Cancer, acting as the patients advocate to ensure the delivery of care is focused on the lung cancer patient and family.
  • Demonstrate a capability to engage in decision making in relation to the assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of patient care, in collaboration with other key health professionals.
  • Support the medical staff in the out-patient department, ward environment and primary care settings regarding lung cancer issues and agendas.
  • Be able to communicate sensitively with patients & carers, often delivering very distressing & sensitive information. Offering support, empathy, and reassurance regarding their on-going condition. Be able to communicate in demanding and often challenging situations.
  • Be actively involved with multi-disciplinary team (MDT) planning, implementation, and outcomes.
  • Provide professional clinical advice via telephone or in person, to colleagues and the public, around lung cancer issues when required.
  • Provide education and advice for patients and their carers by understanding the resources & services which may enhance their experiences on their cancer journey. Encourage patients and carers to be involved in the planning and participation of their management.
  • Refer patients and carers to relevant services as appropriate, to address & support any needs identified during holistic assessment & review.
  • Collaborate with the Home Oxygen Service Assessment & Review team (HOS-AR) to ensure safe and effective assessment and arranging provision of Home Oxygen therapy for the lung cancer patient population.
  • You will be required to practice in a self-directed manner, with confidence, authority, and expertise in prioritising & organising your own specialist workload. Whilst being able to work as part of a large MDT and adapt to the role of mediator/protagonist to improve service provision.

  • Be aware of relevant local, national & international legislation, guidelines & cancer strategies, and their effect on service provision for lung cancer patients and their families.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement and development of the Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist service.
  • The Associate Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist will function both individually and as a team member, demonstrating competencies consistent with the Nursing and Midwifery Councils; The Code & Standards of practice, RCN NP competencies & standards and the RCP prescribing framework.
  • Support with Trust policy development, either by way of innovation or by policy review.
  • Engage with consultant teams in identifying and managing patients reaching end-stage disease, establishing ceilings of treatment, end of life care decisions/discussions, advance care planning conversations, where appropriate.
