Job summary

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic Consultant to join our friendly and committed team to help provide a fully comprehensive clinical and laboratory Haematology service to our patients. We are a team of 7 Consultants and this new post is a replacement post. At SWBH, our catchment population is over 500,000, fulfilling IOG for MDT working and offering a full level 2b Haemato-oncology service in addition to regional Sickle cell and thalassemia (SCAT ) service.

We are seeking a forward thinking and energetic individual who will be committed to delivering high quality care to the patients of SWBH. The post is for Haemato-oncology service, including contributing to the existing large research clinical trial portfolio. We will encourage a specialist interest in any field of haemato-oncology (Myeloid or Lymphoid or plasma cell malignancies) We have a strong research and academic links with University Hospital Birmingham and Aston. The successful candidate would be able to develop their own research interests.

Main duties of the job

The post will enable the successful applicant to collaborate and work to maintain Haematology services in line with strategic requirements. The post holder will provide inpatient and outpatient care, advice and guidance to other professionals and primary care and includes on call commitment. The post holder will contribute to the development of Haemato-oncology services including treatment guidelines and promote education and participate in clinical trials.

The appointee is expected to demonstrate a firm commitment to the principles of clinical governance, including: Developing and maintaining appropriate systems and practice to ensure effective clinical audit in the Haematology service. Attending and contributing to the Trust's Clinical Governance Programme. Participating in the Trust's Clinical Incident Reporting system. Developing a programme of personal continuous professional education and development in accordance with the Royal College requirements.

The Trust will provide the necessary support for this. The on-call commitment for this post is currently 1 in 7. The on-call availability supplement is currently Category A and currently classed as medium frequency with an on-call availability supplement of 3 % currently payable.

This replacement post in haematooncology will attract 10 PAs with on call reneumeration. The Job plan will be developed around specialist interests and the needs of the service, clinical and laboratory. The team of consultants will work together to deliver the Haematooncology needs of the Acute Trust . The new appointee will take part in a 1:7 on-call rota to cover the inpatient service at MMUH as non-resident . Staff ward cover for haemato-oncology patients includes one IMT, and two FY1 resident doctors on the medical rotations, and the permanent full time Haematology specialty doctor. The appointee will be based at new MMUH site when on ward cover (2 weeks in rotation with other consultants) whereas clinics are held at the sites of Sandwell and City Health Campus.

The Haematology day unit is situated at Sandwell health campus and is managed by senior chemotherapy nurse and trained ACPS. We have a team of 4 specialist nurses who assist in managing haemonc clinics and ward and provide a holistic service to haematooncology patients. In addition we have two rotational specialty registrars and an IMT resident doctor working for SCAT service, however cross cover is available when needed. The SCAT center is located at MMUH separate to main ward and is manned by specialist SCAT nurses and separate SCAT medical staff. The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Birmingham, Aston University and Health Education West Midlands. Haematology Department is actively involved in major national and commercial clinical trials and a research interest would be strongly supported for a suitably qualified applicant. We have at least two dedicated research nurses, a support assistant and two data coordinators who help in recruitment and data collection. We are also seeking a clinical research fellow to help in the recruitment and also support our research staff in already established research clinics. In addition the department works closely with regional specialist MDT at University Hospital Birmingham for stem cell and CAR-T cell service. The laboratory network is now fully digitalized and linked to Black country pathology service and specialist Haematology services are linked to MYRO services at university of Birmingham.
