Senior Sister/ Charge Nurse - Emergency Care

The closing date is 03 November 2025

Job summary

Now is an exciting time to join Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust as we continue our journey to becoming one of the largest and most forward-thinking trusts in Europe, following our move to the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

We are looking for a passionate, motivated, and experienced Clinical Senior Sister/Charge Nurse to lead our dedicated team in the Emergency Department. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a transformational moment in urgent and emergency care, playing a vital role at our state-of-the-art facility.

In this role, you will ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred care that meets agreed clinical and operational standards. You will also provide visible, compassionate leadership, supporting and developing a high-performing, empowered nursing team.

We are seeking a confident leader with substantial emergency care experience, strong operational management skills, and a proven ability to drive service improvement. You will be a clinical expert, with a deep understanding of emergency care pathways and a clear passion for delivering excellence.

Working closely with the ED Unit Leads, Matrons, and specialty teams across Emergency and Acute Medicine, you will play a key part in shaping the future of our services.

If you are committed to clinical excellence and ready to make a real impact, we would love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 7 Clinical Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, safe, and effective care. You will oversee clinical standards, lead nursing teams, support education, and contribute to continuous improvement through research and governance.

You will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate personalised care while acting as a clinical expert and role model. You'll coordinate daily nursing activity, respond to patient needs, and ensure timely, effective interventions. You'll promote health education, provide emotional support to patients and families, and uphold NMC standards.

You'll take operational responsibility for the department during shifts, ensuring appropriate staffing, skill mix, and effective patient flow. You will lead by example, address performance issues, manage conflict, and maintain high standards of care, communication, and professionalism.

You will foster a learning culture, supporting in-house training and mentoring staff and students. You'll conduct personal development reviews, support CPD, and promote evidence-based practice.

You'll support audits, incident reporting, and quality initiatives. You will engage in research, contribute to clinical governance, and apply new developments in emergency care to improve patient outcomes.

About us

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWB) serves Birmingham and the Black Country - one of the country's most culturally diverse areas. It's a friendly and welcoming place - a place where you can belong, and a place where you can grow.

We care for our patients, we care about our population, and we care about our people.

Our values - Ambition, Respect and Compassion - are at the heart of who we are. They guide us every step of the way; how we work with each other, and how we look after our patients and their families; how we respect and value the rich diversity of our team and our community.

Our Trust has always aspired to be more than a hospital, more than a healthcare provider. Our purpose is to "Improve the Life Chances and Health Outcomes of our Population." It is what inspires, drives, and unites us every day. It's what makes us unique.

We want working at SWB to feel like more than just a job. We want our Trust to be a place where you can feel you belong. A place where you feel happy, safe, and rewarded.
