Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust

Consultants in Respiratory Medicine

The closing date is 12 August 2025

Job summary

Applications are invited for the posts of Consultant Physicians in Respiratory and General Medicine. These are posts that have arisen due to expansion of the specialty. The successful applicants would be joining the twelve Chest Physicians working at the MMUH Hospital site and our City and Sandwell Health Campuses. These posts require GIM on call cover.

The Respiratory Unit within the Trust has a designated respiratory hub located on the MMUH site, two sophisticated Pulmonary Function Laboratories, and well equipped Endoscopy Suites. EBUS and medical thoracoscopy are carried out, and there is an established pleural and home NIV service. Our hospital is an integrated care organisation and involved in the Royal College of Physicians Future Hospital Project. There are supporting junior medical staff, specialist nurses for inpatient respiratory care, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, and TB, and a dedicated respiratory general manager. The post is likely to include cross site working. There would be opportunities to develop and expand specialty interests. All interests could be considered, including COPD, cough, ILD, breathlessness, non-invasive ventilation, bronchiectasis, acute portal respiratory work and integrated care.

Main duties of the job

The applicant would join the existing team and help develop subspecialty interests. They would take part in the GIM on call rota and also weekend working which includes separate respiratory working as well as general medicine. In addition it is expected they would take part in governance, educational supervision and lead on aspects of development of sub-specialty services, as well as the opportunity for research and teaching. The work is a combination of on and off ward sessions.
