Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust

Clinical Nurse Specialist - Acute Oncology

The closing date is 03 August 2025

Job summary

Acute oncology services (AOS) strive to deliver continuous improvements in emergency and unplanned cancer care. AOS are renowned for their inter-professional working, improving communication between teams, providing timely expert advice, improving patient experience and cost savings through streamlining investigations, early discharge and admission avoidance.

Our AOS is led by Acute Oncology Advanced Practitioners (ACP/ AP) and supported by Oncologists from the regional cancer centre. While all oncology patients receive their cancer treatment elsewhere, many still receive their emergency treatment locally, and AOS support these patients through ensuring they are on the correct pathway, acting as the main liaison between ED, the admitting medical team and the Oncologist.

The successful candidate should be passionate and eager to learn, with a desire to provide the highest level care to our patients, and experience of assessing the unwell patient and/or Haematology/Oncology experience

Main duties of the job

Acute Oncology at SWBH is predominately a front door facing service. The post holder will be expected to support the ACP in assessing and implementing care for patients that present unwell either due to their cancer or the cancer treatment. This could be in the emergency department or SDEC. The post holder will also be expected to review patients that are admitted and support the medical teams in providing excellent care. The Acute Oncology Service also liaise with the primary cancer team to ensure all teams are aware of relevant medical information.
