Job summary
The post holder will co-ordinate and develop services provided for women with diabetes or who develop diabetes in pregnancy. They will act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the women and multi professional team. Provide leadership and expert advice on Clinical Practice and developing clinical practices in conjunction with the Head of Midwifery and the Consultant Midwife.
The post holder will ensure referral to the appropriate health professional when deviations from the normal occur and will work in partnership with that health professional to ensure safe standards of care. The post holder will be responsible for education Midwives and Doctors in aspects of Diabetes and Midwifery care
Lead the development of clinical practice with specific reference to Diabetes with in the Division ensuring it develops in line with national and regional policy and innovation, ensuring it is at the forefront of practice development and is evidence based.
To exercise higher levels of judgement, discretion and decision making and clinical care that reflects advanced knowledge and understanding of the needs of the needs of the specific client group.
Main duties of the job
To make available to the women information to facilitate their management of diabetes in order to promote independence and minimise complications.
To teach diabetic women the use of glucometers and practical skills of diabetes self care, including how to give insulin using different devices.
To offer support / advice to diabetic women in person or by telephone.
To be an advocate for the woman as required empowering her to promote her own health and well being. Raise concerns on her behalf, if required, with the medical team.
To follow up ante / postnatal women admitted to the wards
Promote a culture of normality in childbirth whilst being able to identify and enable others to recognise deviations from the normal in diabetes management. Ensure appropriate clinical care and action is taken during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period.
Attend regional Diabetes Screening Forum and network with other diabetes specialist midwives.
Work with the Midwife Consultant, Diabetes specialist Nurses and Midwifery Educator to ensure that specialist education and training needs meet the requirements of the Service, multidisciplinary teams and women.
