Overview of the job role
We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive Consultant to join our Clinical Toxicology and General Internal Medicine teams. Applications are welcomed from candidates with recognised training and broad experience in clinical toxicology and internal medicine, with full registration with the GMC. Applicants must be on the GMC's Specialist Register via a CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) in Clinical Toxicology and General (Internal) Medicine; CESR or European Community Rights.
This post is primarily based at City Hospital, Birmingham. The appointee will act as Consultant Clinical Toxicologist to the National Poisons Information Service (Birmingham Unit) and will also be responsible for the care of patients on the West Midlands Poisons Unit. They will also undertake weekday sessions, but no on call (unless separately agreed), in general internal medicine. The latter may be at the Sandwell site.

Main duties of the job
- To provide, with the other Consultants in the specialty, routine and emergency Clinical Toxicology and GIM services to the Trust, operating a system of mutual out-of-hours cover, and cover for annual, study and professional leave. The advertised job plan does not require an on-call contribution to general internal medicine though this is available by negotiation if the appointee so wishes.
- To participate in the education and training of junior doctors, medical students, nurses, paramedics and general practitioners.
- To participate in research in accordance with priorities agreed within the Clinical Groups and the Trust within available resources.
- To contribute to the development of Clinical Toxicology services, treatment guidelines and the promotion of greater knowledge of the management of Clinical Toxicology conditions in primary care.
- To demonstrate a firm commitment to the principles of clinical governance.
