The National Poisons Information Service provides advice to health professionals on all aspects of clinical toxicology, via a computerised database (TOXBASE), by telephone and in correspondence. The West Midlands Poisons Unit admits some 1300 patients annually either directly from the Accident and Emergency Department or from other hospitals. Patients withdrawing from alcohol and other substances of abuse are also admitted regularly and planned alcohol detoxification takes place regularly.

The single-site Acute Hospital will benefit from co-located specialist services and will provide state-of-the-art treatment and care for patients from Sandwell and across the region and will become the civic heart of the area and a point of pride for the community.

Research

The University of Birmingham would like to support research by offering two protected research PAs to recently appointed (within 18 months) consultants. Sessions will be prioritised for those with a commitment to research and an interest in an area of research that maps to University of Birmingham strengths. Support will be assessed on a competitive basis.

Qualifications:

Essential

• oEntry on the Specialist Register in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, or in Clinical Toxicology, and in General Internal Medicine. (or CCT expected within 6 months from the date of interview)

Desirable

• oHigher Degree

Clinical Experience:

Essential

• oExtensive experience in provision of direct clinical care to acute medical and general internal medicine and poisoned patients, including those requiring high-dependency care
• oExperience of managing patients with alcohol and drug related problems
• oExperience of managing health consequences of occupational and environmental exposures
• oPostgraduate teaching experience in clinical toxicology and acute medicine

Desirable

• oSpecial interest that complements the existing consultants
• oExperience of working in the National Poisons Information Service

Management and Administrative Experience:

Essential

• oAbility to organise and prioritise workload effectively

Clinical Effectiveness

Essential

• oExperience of conducting clinical audit

Teaching and Training experience:

Essential

• oAbility to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines.

Desirable

• oFormal training in teaching

Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience:

Essential

• oAbility to apply research outcomes to clinical problems

Desirable

• oPublications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
