Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a well-established Overseas Visitors team as an Overseas Visitors Officer.

The NHS (Charges to Overseas Visitors) Regulations 2015 and NHS (Charges to Overseas Visitors) (Amendment) Regulations 2017 place a legal obligation on all NHS Trusts to charge for treatment provided to patients who have been assessed as chargeable Overseas Visitors, and where possible to obtain payment in advance for any treatment which is not deemed to be urgent or immediately necessary.

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing advice and liaising with internal colleagues and external agencies, regarding all matters concerned with identification, assessment and charging of Overseas Visitor patients, in accordance with national legislation and guidelines, as well as local Trust policies and procedures.

Previous experience of working in the NHS, and a working knowledge of the Overseas Visitors charging regime would be an advantage, but all necessary training will be provided to the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and maintaining a thorough knowledge and understanding of Overseas Visitors charging regulations, Trust policies and procedures. Providing a consistent and knowledgeable contact point for Trust colleagues on all matters related to Overseas Visitors and the applicable regulations and guidanc
  • Supporting the Overseas Visitors Manager in maintaining robust processes for identification, assessment and billing of chargeable patients to maximise financial recover
  • Conducting interviews with patients/relatives to assess eligibility for NHS care, responding to emotionally heightened situations calmly, sensitively and robustl
  • Collating identity and residency documentation, assessing eligibility based on charging regulations and guidance, maintaining detailed records and databases for all case
  • Determining the appropriate costs applicable to chargeable treatment, in liaison with finance colleagues, obtaining payment in advance and/or post treatment as appropriate, and pursuing settlement of invoices issued to chargeable patient
  • Updating Trust and external systems with information regarding Overseas Visitor status of patients
