Job summary

The Nutrition and Dietetics Service at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust is excited to recruit a Dietetic Support Worker to work within our hospital based nutrition and dietetic team within our ambitious and forward-thinking therapies structure.

Our belief is that dietitians, nutrition nurses and support staff:

  • Enable recovery
  • Empower quality of life
  • Bring independence and dignity to our patients

We are looking for an innovative individual who is driven to support a hospital based team of dietitians and nutrition nurses. Experience working within dietetics or nutrition is not essential but the successful candidate would ideally have experience of working within the health and social care setting and experience of working with people in a customer care facing role.

You would be joining a supportive, frindly and progressive team and working alongside our existing dietetic support staff with dietitians and nutrition nurses in a team of more than 30. Our service is growing following recent investment and is well integrated with the Speech and Language Therapy Department. As a trust we celebrate a strong positive focus on Nutrition and Hydration as a Key Fundamental of Care.

Main duties of the job

This role is a highly valued support role for our nutrition and dietetics team with the main day to day functions to support the Dietitians to provide a service to referred patients with a particular emphasis on adult inpatient and outpatients attending the diabetes service.

The successful candidate will work independently in our acute hospitals and outpatient settings with supervision and guidance from qualified dietitians. Candidates will be supported to complete competencies and training to develop confidence and competence in reviewing dietetic plans and completing clinical activity with the older adult inpatient population and the diabetes outpatient population.

For those seeking long-term career opportunities we do support career development pathways and this role can act as a gateway towards developing into one of our band 4 - Nutrition and Hydration Assistant roles. As a department we also support the Dietetic apprenticeship pathway for those with long-term aspirations to become a qualified dietitian. Our Allied Health Professions Council also offers the opportunity for our support staff to engage with our Chief Allied Health Professional and senior trust staff providing a voice into the future development of our services.

About us

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:

  1. Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
  2. Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do
  3. Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve live
