Job summary

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust are looking to recruit a Medical Physics Technologist to work in the Department of Physics and Nuclear Medicine, on a fixed term basis (12 months) to cover maternity leave.

This fixed term post is focused on the technical side of the service. It will involve routine testing of radionuclide equipment; data collection, entry and analysis; and report writing. Additional duties will depend on the needs of the service and the experience of the post holder.

It is a great opportunity for someone considering a career in Medical Physicsand would be ideal work experience to support an application to the Scientist or Practitioner Training Schemes.

The department currently has three gamma cameras. In addition, the department has a wide range of other equipment used in nuclear medicine, such as surgical probes, sample counters, and source calibrators. We also run the national Rubidium/Krypton gas service which operates from the University of Birmingham.

The catalogue of studies we perform is highly varied and the department has developed a reputation for research and development in nuclear medicine. As well as diagnostic imaging, we perform therapy procedures as well as carrying out non-imaging studies, all performed in compliance with the various applicable legislations.

As this is a short term, fixed term position with immediate start, the Trust will not be able to support visa applications from international applicants.

Main duties of the job

The main duties are focused more towards the technical side of nuclear medicine such as the quality control of our wide range of radionuclide equipment. In addition, the role will involve technical audits, completing technical reports, and protocol developments. Due to the technical nature of this role, applications are encouraged from those with equivalent qualifications such as a BSc (Hons) in Physics or equivalent.

In 2024, we will be moving into a brand new home nearby, the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH). New equipment is to be installed, and will include three32-slice Siemens Pro.SPECTA SPECT/CT systems in a spacious new department. You will play an active role in the commissioning of this new equipment and support the Principal Clinical Scientist with all aspects of the service to include regulatory compliance.

The department has a strong team ethic hence you will be expected to work closely with the administrative team, Clinical Technologists, Nurses and Clinicians including both our ARSAC license holders. This will include taking part in multi-disciplinary reporting sessions as well as an active role in research and development.
