Job summary
We are seeking to recruit enthusiastic and hardworking doctors to join our Geriatric Medicine Department as Junior Specialty doctor - Higher at City Hospital, Birmingham and Sandwell General Hospital.
The replacement posts will be one year fixed term posts in the first instance starting from as soon as possible with the possibility of longer term opportunities within the Trust subject to performance and progress. These posts are at ST3+ level (i.e. 4/5 years post qualification) and whilst not approved training posts we would mirror the training opportunities to those given to training post holders. The JSD rotation will allow you to consolidate your medical experience in a supportive environment, giving you wide ranging clinical exposure and training in a progressive Trust that has won numerous national and local awards.

Main duties of the job
We would be keen to work with successful applicants to design rotations that would provide exposure to the full range of Geriatric and General (internal) medicine to suit their training needs and career aspirations. We envisage that the JSD (Higher) would act as a stepping stone into specialty training in Geriatric and General Medicine. The candidate will also contribute to the General Medicine rota where they will carry out roles in line with a middle grade in medicine. This will include leading the acute medical take, reviewing and managing acutely unwell patients in ED, AMU and wards and leading the EMRT team.
Appointees will gain experience in all medical procedures and will also work within the medical ambulatory care. This post in Elderly Care will involve in SpR rotations within Acute Geriatrics, General Geriatrics and Stroke Medicine. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside Geriatricians with a special interest in the above fields.

The Geriatric Medicine Department are part of the Admitted Care Directorate of the Group of Medicine and Emergency Care. There are 4 established Geriatric Medicine wards at Sandwell and City Hospitals currently with 108 inpatient beds in total. The Geriatric Medicine wards provide acute care with provision for further rehabilitation if required at various intermediate care sites in the locality. A full time Orthogeriatrician works with the trauma & orthopaedic team to provide care for all neck of femur fracture patients and offer a liaison service on the trauma & orthopaedic wards for non-neck of femur fracture patients. The team is currently running a front door frailty intervention project to improve the care of the frail older patients in the emergency department which provides an exciting opportunity for you be part of a specialist team to work with in a multidisciplinary team to improve the care of the older patients.
