Job summary

Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust is building a best-in-class logistics service that is patient centric. The service is driven by clinical need and will be delivered by a unified, skilled and effective team.

The Trust is focused on creating one logistics team using a standardised way of working. We will also be moving to a single inventory management solution.

The Head of Logistics role is a new role that will be responsible for managing the activity of a large joined-up function. The post holder will be required to coordinate and optimise logistics operations within our new hospital (Midland Metropolitan University Hospital) and the retained estate.

Main duties of the job

The Head of Logistics is responsible for the smooth running of the Logistics function. The focus is on reducing risk by ensuring we have the right product in the right place at the right time.

The Head of Logistics will be managing a large team of Scan for Safety Officers and Logistics Operatives, together with a number of other critical posts and related services, including transport.

It is critical that the postholder optimises the flow of goods, schedules activity efficiently and ensures safe stock levels across all sites.

The Head of Logistics will also be responsible for the safe operation of the Automated Guided Vehicles that have been introduced to the new hospital site.

About us

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated careorganisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

The newly created centralised logistics function will consist of 150+ staff responsible for the movement of all non-patient related activity around MMUH and the retained estate.
