SANDWELL AND WEST BIRMINGHAM HOSPITALS NHS TRUST

Junior Specialist Doctors (JSD) - Lower

Posts available in General Medical Specialties

"Right now we are building our future"

We are seeking to recruit a number of enthusiastic and hardworking doctors to join our General Medicine Departments as Junior Specialty doctors at City Hospital, Birmingham and Sandwell General Hospital, West Bromwich. These posts will be 6 months fixed term posts in the first instance starting from 2nd August 2023 with the possibility of longer term opportunities within the Trust subject to performance and progress. These posts would be aimed at junior grade CT/ST 1-2 level (ie 2 years post qualification level) and whilst not approved training posts we would mirror the training opportunities to those given to training post holders. The JSD GM posts will allow you to consolidate your experience in a supportive GM environment, giving you wide ranging clinical exposure and training in a progressive Trust that has won numerous national and local awards. We would be keen to work with successful applicants and help you continue to build your General Medicine Career. We envisage that the JSD would act as a stepping stone into specialty training and we would look to encourage and fully support successful completion of Medicine exams.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will have at least 2 years experience post qualification, full GMC Registration with a license to practice and up to date ALS certification. Recent acute hospital experience at ST1 level, or equivalent (within the last 12 months) of at least 6 months duration is essential. Previous General Medicine experience would be desirable and knowledge of the workings of the NHS is preferable.

The Trust is building the 670 bed Midland Metropolitan University Hospital. It will be worth the wait. Its opening will be the beginning of a fresh chapter in our ambitious journey to be the nation's leading provider of integrated care.

About us

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated careorganisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:

  1. Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
  2. Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do

3. Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve lives

Job description

Job responsibilities

The single-site Acute Hospital will benefit from co-located specialist services which will support the new Emergency Department with dedicated imaging facility and Assessment Units. It will provide state-of-the-art treatment and care for patients from Sandwell and across the region and will become the civic heart of the area and a point of pride for the community.

The Trust is a key partner with the local commissioning group and the local authorities in the Right Care Right Here programme which seeks to deliver a redevelopment of local health services. The programme includes one of the largest investments in the UK with new facilities in both the acute and community sectors. Included within this is the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Birmingham and Health Education West Midlands. The Trust is home to a number of University departments and we are now looking to develop research capacity in a number of specialties in the Trust including Emergency Medicine so there is likely to be opportunities to become involved in research activities. There is a clinical skills laboratory on the Acute Medical Unit which is the first in the UK.

Birmingham is a vibrant, multi-cultural city and it is a very exciting place to live and work. It has a population of 1.1 million, the youngest in Europe. Its residents speak over 140 languages and blend different cultures and nationalities with history that is rich in industrial heritage.

The area boasts affordable housing with popular residential districts such as Harborne and Sutton Coldfield an easy commute to either of the main hospital sites. There are a number of very good schools and colleges locally (including a number of independent and grammar schools such as the King Edwards Schools). Birmingham is a very green city with more than 8,000 acres of green space including impressive parks around the city. Due to our central location and good motorway connections we are in easy reach of a number of beautiful rural locations including the Peak District, Cannock Chase, the Lickey Hills and the Cotswolds.

For an informal discussion please contact Dr T Chakravorty.
