Job summary

Kent & Medway Mental Health NHS Trust provides a liaison mental health assessment service to the Emergency Department and wards at the counties acute hospitals. It's a challenging and rewarding service to work in.

You will be a confident and experienced mental health clinician, who will work across the acute general hospital to provide mental health assessments, care, advice and training to both the Emergency Departments and in-patient wards.

The Pembury Liaison Psychiatry Service will be operating 24/7, 365 days a year. There is an expectation that the successful candidate will work predominantly Monday to Friday.

Ability to travel to different sites across the Trust in a timely manner

Main duties of the job

  • To provide operational leadership and expertise to a team of clinicians who often work alone, to ensure the timely delivery of a safe and effective assessment service to the general hospitals for people aged 18 and over referred with mental health problems, dementia and co-morbid physical illness.
  • To maintain clinical expertise and leadership skills through regular patient contact (minimum requirement of 1 shift per week).
  • To ensure systems and processes exist to support staff performance in accordance with Trust objectives.
  • To report on and contribute to the monitoring, evaluation and audit of the performance and clinical practice of the liaison service.
  • To liaise with and work collaboratively with Acute Trust colleagues to promote the interface between acute and specialist inpatient and community services and enhance patient experience and recovery.
  • To coordinate a training programme to the general hospital workforce

Training, Qualifications and Registration

Essential

  • Registered Professional Qualification in Mental Health Nursing, Occupational Therapy, including registration with the relevant regulatory body

Desirable

  • Registered General Nurse (as a dual trained practitioner) Post Graduate Degree/Masters programme
  • Qualified Sign Off Mentor (998 or equivalent) / Accredited Practice Educator (APPLE programme for OT)
  • If not a qualified mentor, commitment to work towards this

Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience at band 6 or above
  • Minimum of 2 years diverse post qualification experience

Desirable

  • Formal presentations and teaching
  • Working in a general hospital setting

Knowledge & Skill

Essential

  • Current mental health policy, legislation and joint working practices relating to mental health.
  • Ability to consider how recent Government initiatives relating to mental health can be realised through service developments in liaison services.
  • Good knowledge of NICE guidelines relating to self harm, depression, dementia and delirium
  • Understanding of the effects of physical health, long term conditions on mental health and well being.
  • Can demonstrate leadership skills, motivate staff and inspire confidence & Manage conflict through mediation, negotiation and influencing skills
  • Ability to develop and provide training packages, meeting the needs of the general hospital
  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with others, including written communication skills.
