Job summary
The Trevor Gibbens Unit is a medium secure inpatient forensic unit which specialises in the provision of Medium Secure care provision for adults who present with a mental disorder, complex needs, challenging behaviour and/or have committed criminal offences.
Sports and Exercise Technicians are recognised as essential, core and supportive members of the multi-disciplinary team and in addition to personal and clinical development opportunities, we offer a number of additional opportunities including regular supervision, Personal Development Plans, and support for Continual Professional Development activities.
An opportunity has arisen to recruit a Sports and Exercise Technician who has a keen interest and enthusiasm in Sports and Exercise within the well-established Occupational Therapy teams at the Trevor Gibbens Unit, Maidstone. We are keen to recruit an individual who has a wide knowledge of health and wellbeing related to sports and exercise.
Main duties of the job
This role as identified in the services above, the successful applicant would work across the unit within the OT team providing care to service users in the in-patient settings.
Main responsibilities would include delivery of sports and exercise activities and groups both within a ward environment as well as in the community, to offer tailored programmes and advice regarding healthy living and lifestyle, and working as a member of the clinical team. There will also be opportunities to deliver treatment programmes in conjunction with other members of the multidisciplinary team.Employment in this post is subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure & Barring Service.

- To deliver sports and exercise individual and group sessions for patients across the two services.
- To undertake day to day assessment of patients physical function and capacity to undertake interventions in liaison with the MDT.
- To assess patients suitability for sports and exercise, adhering to local and national guidelines where appropriate.
- To be familiar with patients medication and the possible side effects when planning and/or designing sports and exercise sessions.
- To adapt and evaluate sports and exercise interventions ensuring that they support the patient to meet their needs and any possible limitations are taken into account, adjusting own approach accordingly.
- To design sports and exercise sessions collaboratively with patients.
- To continually review and evaluate patients progress, treatment plans and risk assessments as the patients condition changes, making suitable alterations to their sports and exercise programmes.
- To ensure accurate and reliable documentation of patient records are maintained in accordance with local and Trust standards.
- To contribute to the completion of patient care plans and assessments.
- To attend and contribute to the teams handovers and feedback sessions regarding sports and exercise individual and group activities.
- To be able to successfully organise and manage a caseload.
- To assess risk and manage it effectively within clinical settings, ensuring a safe environment in which to exercise.
- To be able to manage challenging behaviour and set clear boundaries within a sport/exercise setting.
- To work with patients, who often have distressing or challenging social/clinical experiences/behaviours.
- To support patients to engage in community sports and exercise activities as part of their recovery.
