Job responsibilities

The post holder will under the guidance and direction of the Specialist Advisors and Lead Instructor provide direct training in the Reducing Restrictive Physcical Interventions (RRPI). The poster holder will deliver supporting theory, non physical interventions as well as physical interventions. The post holder will contribute to the development of training in collaboration with the Specialist Advisors and the Senior Instructor.

This job description is an outline of the main duties of the post. The postholder will be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as directed.

The content of this post will be reviewed in consultation with the postholder when necessary and in line with the service developments.

KEY RESULT AREAS:

1.1 Care/service/function provision:

To deliver excellent levels of Reducing Restrictive Physical Intervention training including theory and physical elements of the courses.

To work as part of South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation NHS Trust (SWYPFT) Reducing Restrictive Physcical Interventions Network under the direction of the Specialist Advisors.

To deliver under the guidance and direction of the Lead Instructor and or Specialist Advisors a range of training programmes on the Prevention and Reducing Restrictive Physcical Interventions across all Business Delivery Units and all Trust sites

To ensure training is in accordance with Trust operational and training policies and procedures.

To ensure that all training focuses on the primary prevention of violence and de-escalation before physical intervention and the importance of the intervention selected is a reasonable and proportionate response to the risk posed.

To promote a philosophy throughout the organisation of empowerment and least restrictive practice in line with the Trusts vision values and goals.

Communicate and deal with staff who have either been involved personally, or have witnessed violent or aggressive incidents withgin their working environments.

1.2 Working as part of a Team:

To assist in promoting RRPI training to the Trust and to local organisations and to deliver appropriate RRPI training to local organisations if required.

Support the Lead Instructor and Specialist Advisors in providing a confidential and professional RRPI service to Managers and Staff.

To liaise with the Specialist Advisors and Lead Instructor regarding the organisation of the day to day planning of training courses, any required absence cover, participants non attendance.

Monitor the training environment and all equipment in use for training to ensure its safe operational use and record and report any defects.

Provide a safe training environment where students feel able to express their own views and oppinions and actively encourage two way communisation.

Assist the Wards/Services with enquiries regarding staff training e.g. appropriate attendance.

Liaise with Wards/Services within SWYPFT to promote RRPI practice

To highlight possible adaptations to course content to meet the needs of individuals in terms of physical and theoretical content, as well as emotional support and health and safety liaising.Any changes to the course should only be made after consultation with Specialist Advisors, unless there is an imminent risk to participants.

To identify staff who during training

are considered at risk of injury

are unable to adapt correct body mechanics

are unable to use correct techniques

fail to demonstrate appropriate professional conduct

may have pre existing psychological issues relating to the management of aggression and violence

To take appropriate action in relation to the above by

Liaising with Specialist Advisors

Liaising with line managers

Liaising with Occupational health and/or other agencies

1.3 Managing Self:

Participate in clinical supervision to develop skills and knowledge of clinical care and practice and apply continuous reflection on own practice

To contribute to the development and improvement of services within the Trust specifically in RRPI.

Prioritise work around a busy training schedule

Work as a member of the RRPI team providing written and verbal feedback as appropriate to the participants and Service Leads.

Effectively communicate with staff

Maintain accurate records of training activity, individual performance and the reporting of significant issues to relevant managers

To assist in maintaining and updating all resources for training and in consultation with Specialist Advisors.

Attend and actively participate in appropriate service meetings and staff development sessions.

Handle sensitive and/or confidential work and patient related information confidentially.

Undertake regular Visual Display Unit (computer) work. There is a requirement to accurately input data and generate reports. Asssist in the design and preparation of course material and lesson plans.

Attend and actively participate in RRPI/RRPI service meetings and staff development sessions.

Develop own knowledge and practice in this specialist area.

Actively participate in the Trusts annual appraisal process.

Access and attend training appropriate to this role and stay up to date with all mandatory training.

The post holder must be physically fit to provide moderate to extreme physical effort during training.

Carry teaching and presentation equipment to courses/training/meetings across various sites.

1.4 Management Supervision and Support:

The post holder has no managerial supervision responsibility but is expected to be a good example to other Support instructors and new support Supoport Instructors

1.5 Financial Responsibility:

The post Holder has no financial reposnsibilty however is expected to support the Trust to use resources efficiently and suggest efficiency savings to more senior staff

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• NVQ Level 3 in health-related subject or equivalent or be able to demonstrate those competencies.
• Willingness to complete Award in Preparing to Teach in the lifelong learning sector or equivalent relevant qualification within 12 months of starting the post

Desirable

• Care certificate

Experience

Essential

• Substantial experience of working in mental health /learning disability setting
• Direct experience of managing distressed high risk of situations

Desirable

• Experience in delivering training

TRAINING

Essential

• Attended Reducing Restrictive Interventions Course
• Evidence of continuous development and training

Desirable

• First Aid at Work Certificate

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

Essential

• Knowledge of contemporary issues in reducing restrictive interventions
• Communication and organisational skills

Desirable

• Presentation and demonstration skills
