Full Time - 37.5 Hours Per Week

The Estates Department have an excellent opportunity for an individual to join our Grounds Maintenance team. As a Grounds Maintenance Worker you will carry out general maintenance activities working as part our Estates Team. The post will be trustwide serving our sites across the West and South Yorkshire districts although primarily based at Kendray Hospital in Barnsley.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to carry out your works to a high standard on a daily basis. This will be at Kendray Hospital in Barnsley and at other trust sites across South and West Yorkshire as required so a full driving licence is essential

JOB SUMMARY

The Estates Department Grounds Maintenance Services provide a high-quality service to the grounds and gardens of the Trust portfolio of properties and provide a safe and pleasant external environment.

The Lead Grounds Maintenance Operative will primarily provide leadership, co-ordination and maintenance to the grounds and gardens. Assisting and complementing the grounds maintenance operatives duties for the upkeep of the mowed lawns, general grassed areas and meadowlands, low maintenance borders, ornamental flowering borders, trees and undertake general horticultural duties such as seasonal planting.

The scope of work relates to various types of seasonal work including road sweeping and litter/debris collection as well as snow clearing and gritting of the footpaths and roads

To undertake other maintenance assistant duties and leadership duties, as required/directed by line manager and to assist maintenance staff as directed.

JOB DIMESIONS

Daily supervision of staff, staff monitoring and organisation of works.

Reporting of sickness absence to line manager, organisation of annual leave planning and time sheet accuracy checking.

Stock control monitoring of all grounds maintenance equipment and consumables and completion of order forms for authorisation by line manager.

Collect materials and equipment from suppliers as necessary to undertake schedules of work as necessary for the grounds maintenance team.

Using specialist knowledge and skills to provide direct supervision, support and guidance to maintain high levels of quality and to assist other members of the grounds maintenance team.

Carry out grounds maintenance tasks with minimal, indirect supervision. Using skills and experience work unaided making horticultural related decisions where necessary.

Decision making and prioritisation in adverse weather conditions including the use of grit, workload and quantity of material use for grounds maintenance team.

Responsible for the security of all grounds maintenance and plant and equipment, reporting any security concerns to the line manager.

Planning and organising out of hours on call duty schedules and rotas.

Quality control checking of al works and to engage in the improvement and continuoius development of the estates grounds and gardens planning.

KEY RESULT AREAS:

Undertake leadership and co-ordination of grounds and garden improvement and development schemes.

Undertake grass mowing ornate lawns, general areas and meadows using hand and ride on grass cutting machinery.

Preparation, pruning and seasonal planting of decorative borders using mechanical motivators, tractors and trailer.

Hedge trimming and strimming to gradients and edges.

General upkeep of horticultural areas i.e. shrub and plant flowering borders.

Leaf collection using specialist machinery and appliance.

Road sweeping and litter bins debris collection by hand/machinery.

Gritting of footpaths and roads during adverse winter weather conditions including participation in local on call arrangements for snow clearing and gritting during winter months.

Health and safety monitoring and reporting.

Maintenance and upkeep of garden machinery as necessary.

Participate in ad hoc local arrangements for snow clearing and gritting.

Supporting craft persons of all disciplines.

To advise your superior regarding plant and equipment failures, and identify materials and services required.

Complete all works to a high standard and to the satisfaction of your supervisor whilst meeting the services aims and objectives.

Carry out duties in a professional and consciencious manner.

Daily completion of planned preventative maintenance and reactive estate helpdesk job requests.

Ensure all report forms, documentation and test certificates are accurately completed in compliance with the services policies and procedures.

Carry out all works to approved safety systems at all times to prevent damage or injury to ones self, other staff, plant and equipment with particular care when working in hazardous, confined, unpleasant areas or working at height.

Use correctly relevant tools, plant and machinery in accordance with manufacturers instructions in compliance with health and safety guidelines, good practice guidance and associated regulations.

Be responsible for all your tools, machinery and materials whilst carrying out work in safe manner when working on external grounds of low secure hospital premises.

Interpret and work from routine instructions with minimum supervision.

Supervise and assist trainees/apprentices as required.

Undertake health and safety training and specific associated job-related training including but not limited to, manual handling, COSHH, working at heights, confined spaces, ladders, scaffolds etc.

Communicate with external bodies when necessary to assist in undertaking own duties.
