The NHS takes security very seriously. Patients and staff need to be kept safe while in hospital, so access must be limited to people with a genuine reason to be on hospital premises.
As a security officer, you will play a central role to help create a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and staff across all our premises.
Security officers are based at the Fieldhead Hospital, but spend a lot of their time across the trust at various premises, making sure everything is safe and secure while liaising with trust staff and patients.
Security staff need to be outgoing to ensure that we create a security awareness with NHS colleagues and patients, while patrolling the grounds and car parks.
We require a level of public sector or similar experience and training in security, particularly dealing with challenging situations. SWYPFT requires relevant training and the basic training we are looking for are Security Industry Authority (SIA) Door Supervisor- or Security Officer Licence.
We expect a good standard of numeracy and literacy and require a GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths. We also require a driving licence for this role.
When you join the NHS in a security role, you will have an introduction to the hospital site, the departments and their systems and procedures. You will be expected to keep your skills and knowledge up to date by going on short courses on particular topics, such as conflict resolution and physical intervention.
Main duties of the job
As a security officer, you will play a central role to help create a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and staff across all our premises by:
- Making sure visitors have a reason to be in the hospital
- Ask official visitors to sign in and issue them with a pass
- Deal with any incidents which might threaten the security of staff and patients
- Where possible, diffuse potentially difficult situations
- Liaise with police or other emergency services if required
- Monitor and review CCTV
- Vigilantly patrol the outside of the hospital including the grounds
- Advise managers and clinical staff on security issues

JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Security Officer will undertake, under own initiative, a full range of security duties to help prevent, deter and detect crime to protect all Trust property.
MAIN DUTES AND RESPONSIBILITES
PROFESSIONAL:
- Responsible for the supervision of internal security staff and external contractors.
- External patrol of all properties as directed to detect and prevent intruder damage.
- Patrol of grounds and building to prevent damage by fire, flood and theft.
- Undertake official driving duties as required.
- To operate trust vehicles in a reasonable manner, complying with all current road traffic regulations.
- Check window and doors on vulnerable property and the securing of same as required.
- Deal with disturbances and the escorting of unauthorised person off the premises.
- Provide a Ward/Department presence in situations where patients and/or visitors are being or potentially being violent or aggressive.
- Carry out investigations when required of any loss or breaches of security and undertake any other follow-up enquiries as necessary.
- Assist at the scene of road traffic accident within hospital grounds and at the scene of major incidents.
- Provide an escort when requested for staff in vulnerable locations.
- Assist in transferring resuscitation equipment within the hospital in an emergency and other transport duties when required.
- Provide security assistance as required in accordance with Emergency Response Procedure, Missing Patient Policy and Emergency Planning Policy.
- Deal with all aspects of car parking related issues including complaints.
- Supervise car parks and support drivers with provision of information in relation available spaces within car parks.
- To be fully conversant with all operational aspects of CCTV systems in relation to the recording and storage of images.
- To be fully conversant in the Trust Policy regarding data protection and information governance, especially in relation to recorded data on security systems.
- Assist at scenes of fire alarms in accordance with Trust policy.
- Act as hospital key holder and respond to issue requests as necessary.
- Train and support new security officers to settle into their new role to ensure a productive security service.
COMMUNICATION:
- To liaise on a daily basis with security management on daily activities and updates.
- To report incidents on burglaries, criminal damage, intruder complaints and all other reportable crime.
- Report incidents, in writing, in line with Trust Incident Reporting Procedure and maintain authorised records relating to duties.
- Utilisation of computerised systems in relation to car parking and security.
- Liaise with outside agencies including requesting police assistance when required.
- Review practical aspects of security and acquaint the Security Management with any associated problem.
- Encourage staff to develop an awareness in crime prevention and the protection of hospital property.
- Communicating with the victims of violence, de-escalating of violent incidents, and calming of violent/distressed people.
- Promote a Pro-security environment to create a safe and secure environment on all Trust premises.
- To ensure all work is carried out in a risk free manner and to liaise with the Security Manager to find solutions to the identified risks.
- To Advise the Security Manager of any out of hours complaints regarding security and car parking issues.
