Job summary

As a Chaplaincy assistant you will support the senior chaplains to ensure the service users needs are met through the delivery of a high-quality compassionate and caring service.

You will assist the Chaplains in providing for the pastoral, spiritual, ethical, and religious needs of service users, relatives and staff and be an active presence around the hospital and community locations in spaces designated for prayer, quiet contemplation, and worship, ward areas and communities across some locations of the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Maintain a high standard when carrying out duties allocated to you by the Senior Chaplain on duty,

You will attend the wards and community sites to provide a listening ear and support to people from diverse backgrounds of culture and religion and with those of no faith.

You will work flexibly to help maintain a consistent service across Trust sites.

You will be ecumenically sensitive and pass on referrals as appropriate to other chaplains within the department

You will be included in conversations within the chaplaincy team where spiritual care is an important issue

You will work within the protocols and practices of the Trust Pastoral and Spiritual Care Chaplaincy department and the UKBHC (UK Board of Health Care Chaplaincy)

Essential

  • Substantial experience volunteering in a similar role (at least 12 months) or with a health care organisation.
  • Pastoral experience in ministry in a mental health or health care focussed environment.
  • Be in good standing with their own faith/belief community.
  • Independent and Teamworking

Desirable

  • Hospital related Chaplaincy

Training

Essential

  • Evidence of in-house training as approved by their faith/belief community and head of Pastoral and Spiritual Care.
  • Proven commitment to personal development
  • Show commitment to undertake further training essential to the requirements of the post.

Desirable

  • Understanding of a range of religions, faiths and beliefs

Special Knowledge Skills

Essential

  • Knowledge of own faith/belief community and religious/belief traditions, plus some understanding of other traditions and faith/belief communities, multi-faith issues and cultural care
  • Computing skills and applications (e.g., Microsoft office)
  • Understanding of the need to maintain confidentiality and to maintain professional boundaries whilst providing compassionate care.
  • Accepting of individual responsibility within a teamwork culture
  • The ability to prioritise workload and act on own initiative with guidance from senior colleagues.
  • Is guided by the UKBHC (UK Board of Healthcare Chaplains) Code of Conduct and the practices and procedures for employees in the NHS.
