Based
at the Pharmacy Department at Fieldhead Hospital, we are looking for efficient
Pharmacy Assistants to join our staffing bank. Possessing a NVQ level 2/ BTEC
level 2 in pharmacy services or registration under GPHC grand parenting clause
for pharmacy support staff.
You
will need to be an enthusiastic, dynamic, self-motivated individual with good
interpersonal skill. Good written and verbal communication skills is essential.
Applicants will ideally have customer service experience and experience in
working within a pharmacy as a dispensing assistant. You will need to be
organised and able to work under pressure to support our Pharmacy Service. The
ability to work accurately is essential.
Main duties of the job
- To work under pharmacy SOPs to provide stock top up and management for wards, with supervision available from pharmacy technicians.
- To dispense medication against prescriptions for both inpatient and outpatients following SOPs, ensuring prescriptions and requisitions are legal and safe.
- Receipt of medication supplies from wholesalers and electronic recording of this.
- To remove unwanted stock medication from the wards to determine what is suitable for return or destruction as per policies.
- Dispensing of controlled drugs as ward stock and for named patients abiding by legal requirements.
- To maintain cost effective stock holding on the wards and supporting stock reviews.
- To ensure good stock control, ensuring stock checks and expiry date checks are completed in a timely manner.
- Maintain up to date knowledge and competency in the skills required to perform safely and effectively in the role.
- Reception duties
- Undertaking relevant statutory and mandatory training and to be responsible for personal development agreed with line manager.

This post is designed to meet the requirements of the pharmacy service delivered from the Fieldhead site.
Participate in ward stock top-up and process stock orders for delivery to Wards and Departments. Including in-patient wards, forensic, learning disability and crisis services.
Replenish dispensary stock ensuring good stock rotation and correct storage.
Contribute to the efficient delivery of the Pharmaceutical Service to Patients, Wards and Departments within the trust
Participate in the dispensing rota. Including controlled drugs
Generate orders for drugs (including controlled drugs) and consumables and direct to suppliers to achieve timely supply
Receive orders , deal with any discrepancies and process returns
Process invoices for goods received
Ensure paperwork generated within the department is filed, archived and destroyed according to standard procedures
Ensure all required documents are available , including stock control of controlled stationary
The content of this post will be reviewed in consultation with the postholder when necessary and in line with the service developments.
KEY RESULT AREAS:
- Assemble stock orders for wards and departments including computer input and generation of all required documentation.
- Prepare smaller packs from bulk stock when required for wards and departments.
- Work closely with staff responsible for procurement at SLA provider hospital to ensure adequate supplies of stock medicines are ordered from the supplier to accommodate fluctuating demand.
- Notify the appropriate Pharmacy Technician responsible for the particular ward/dept of supply problems and seek clarification if required.
- Participate in the ward stock Topping-up service, taking responsibility for a designated set of wards, and inform their support technician and ward staff of any problems.
- Ensure timely delivery of ward stocks in conjunction with the Transport System.
- Sort returned medicines from wards/depts checking for suitability of re-use adhering strictly to departmental procedure.
- Participate in the disposal of waste medications in accordance with trust waste procedures
- Take part in the disposal of benzodiazepines in conjunction with GPHC registered staff.
- Identify any discrepancies with stock levels and investigate the reasons for them. Report the findings to a senior member of staff for subsequent correction.
- Receive stock from SLA provider and assorted wholesalers using the Pharmacy Computer System, reporting any discrepancies back supplier. Processing returns on the pharmacy computer system including matching of credits.
- Put stock away on the dispensary shelves, ensuring rotation of stock and checking of expiry dates.
- Perform daily, computer-generated, rolling stock checks
- Ensure adequate stocks of medicine bottles, cartons, paper/ plastic bags and other pharmacy consumables in the Dispensary.
- Replenish controlled dispensary stationery e.g. prescriptions and requisitions as necessary. Participate in the training of new staff ; demonstrating job role and specific tasks when required.
- Deliver urgent stock requests to wards / departments at the specific request of the Technical Services Managers or Senior Pharmacist
- Participate in reception duties. Including the issue of completed prescriptions to both staff and service users , ensure correct identity checks and paperwork are completed.
- Maintain a clean and tidy workplace at all times.

General - To observe the principals of Clinical Governance in general and, in particular, be able to demonstrate participation in Continuing Professional Development. This will include attendance at appropriate training courses.
