School Age Immunisation Service (Barnsley)

If you are highly committed to promoting the benefits of vaccination and preventing ill health, a rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to join our friendly, professional, and high-performing service, responsible for the promotion and delivery of the routine UK childhood Flu and adolescent vaccination programmes.

Experience in this area is desirable, but training will be provided.

There are 2 posts available:

15 hours per week (term time only)

22.5 hours per week (all year around)

Please note, the proposed start date for the term time only post will be from 1st September 2026 in line with the new academic year.

Postholders will be required to have a flexible approach to hours/days worked to support school sessions, after school/evening clinics & occasional weekends & bank holidays to meet the needs of the children, young people & their families.

Main duties of the job

The post holder:

Will be required to offer vaccinations to children and young people aged between 2 and 18 years old and support discussions with parents/carers around consent. Therefore, excellent and adaptable communication skills are essential.

Will support health promotion events

Will be required to complete vaccination training at least annually to ensure high levels of knowledge and skills in this area.

Will be responsible for the safe storage of vaccinations and maintenance of the cold chain.

Will use electronic E-consent systems and SystmOne to record consent and vaccinations given

Will be required to complete all mandatory training to ensure safe and effective practice.

Will be required to have access to a vehicle and the ability to travel within the required area to schools, other community venues and patient homes.

JOB SUMMARY

KEY RESULT AREAS:

To deliver the national evidence based immunisation programme to the School aged population within Barnsley which includes children and young people not in education, looked after and hard to reach.

To work proactively and in partnership with a range of professionals, partner agencies and parents/carers involved in the care of the child / young person to achieve and maintain high leves of coverage and reduce health inequalities. The service prides itself on its flexible delivery of vaccinations, offering clinics in community venues and home visits to meet the needs of children, young people and their parents/carers.

1.1Care/service/function provision: The service delivers school aged immunisations as per the current Public Health England schedule, commissioned by NHS England. This can include adolescent programmes and the national childhood flu programme. These will mainly be delivered in Barnsley schools however the team also runs catch up clinics and carries out home visits where appropriate. Occasional out of hours working is required in order to meet the needs of the children/young people.

Consent is obtained from parents/carers or young people themselves. This requires robust knowledge of pre-school and school aged vaccination and immunisation programmes and consent policies to give sound evidence based information allowing informed choice.

Excellent communication skills are required to deal with those reluctant to give consent or who refuse vaccination. The skills to relay this information to non-english speaking families is essential. Access to interpreting services is available.

A robust health pre-assessment is required following the collection of consent forms.

Risk assessments of schools and clinic venues are required prior to vaccination sessions.

The service uses SystmOne to record all activity with patients and carers and all vaccinations given or refusals must be recorded on the Child health system. Records should be checked as part of the pre-assessment process to check vaccination status. This may also include contact with GP surgery and other professionals.

The post holder must ensure safe storage, preparation and administration of vaccines in adherence to policy and procedure.

All team members whether working in a substantive or bank role must undertake basic life support and anaphylaxis training as well as approved vaccination and immunisation updates.

1.2 Working as part of a Team: To work within a friendly award winning team committed to excellence in practice, continuously looking for ways to improve the service they deliver. The post holder should be an autonomous practitioner who can take responsibility for the care they deliver but also work as a team member committed to attendance at team activities where a positive culture is encouraged.

1.3 Managing Self: The post holder must be committed to continuous professional development, participate constructively in regular clinical and safeguarding supervision and appraisal processes to support continuous refection on own practice. As a band 5 nurse professional registration with the NMC must be maintained and must comply with the NMC code of conduct.

1.4 Management Supervision and Support: The post holder has no managerial supervision responsibility but will be required to be a good role-model and support their colleagues especially healthcare support workers, admin support and students. They may be asked to deputise for the senior immunisation nurse in their absence.

1.5 Financial Responsibility: The post holder must use Trust resources efficiently and suggest efficiency savings to more senior staff.
