Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to appoint two full time (10 PA), Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon to join our innovative department at an exciting time in our Trusts future although less than full time applications may be considered.

The clinical team consists of 4 Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons, 3 Associate Specialists and 8 Specialist Nurses, which work closely alongside the radiology teams.

The Breast service offers a one stop diagnostic breast clinic every week-day based at the Pinderfields site. Theatre capacity for breast surgical intervention is offered at Pinderfields General Hospital and with adoption of new localisation technologies is offered for other Trust sites: Pontefract and Dewsbury.

We are a busy service with close to 500 cancers treated annually and above 7000 symptomatic referrals seen.

The Breast Team cooperates closely with an experienced Plastic Surgery Team. The 3 Consultant Plastic Surgeons offer DIEP flaps reconstruction

To provide a clinical service of the highest quality to patients with benign or malignant breast diseases.

To provide a high quality breast reconstruction service.

To work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure that we work together as a supportive team.

To support the teaching and research activities of the team.

To provide leadership and act as a role model to junior members of staff.

This post does not include any Emergency on call commitments

Post-operative cover is provided to all breast patients by the team across all sites

Travel between sites may be required, which will be reflected within the job plan.

Administrative duties, for which appropriate office space, secretarial support, and networked computer facilities, are provided.

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust wishes to appoint X2 full time (10 PA) Consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon. This is a new post to join the existing team of four Consultant Breast Surgeons.

The Breast care team consists of 4 Consultant Surgeons 5 Consultant Radiologists, 3 Associate specialists, 1 Specialty Doctor, 2 Specialist Registrars, 8 Specialist Nurses, 3 Breast Pathologists, 2 Clinical Oncologists and 3 Medical Oncologists.

The Breast Service provides over 7000 outpatient appointments and over 500 operations per annum and has a local population of 500 000.

The Breast Unit hosts a weekly MDT meeting within an advanced technological facilities provided by the Dr Jacksons fund, which is attended by the surgeons, medical oncologists, clinical oncologist, pathologist, radiologists, radiographers, and breast care nurses, advanced radiology practitioners, Palliative care nurses, research nurses and MDT co-ordinator.

Duties will be based primarily on our Wakefield (Pinderfields) site although may require some cross site travel.

The main duties of the posts will include:

To provide a clinical service of the highest quality to patients with benign or malignant breast diseases.

To provide a high quality breast reconstruction service.

To work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure that we work together as a supportive team.

  • Sufficient experience at Senior level in to be placed on the Specialist Register.
  • Computer literate.
  • Fully accredited by college and acceptable to college representative.
  • Clinical Training and experience in oncoplastic breast surgery equivalent to that required of a UK CCST. Statement regarding appropriate training and experience including that relating to a specialist interest. Excellent clinical skills and substantial experience of benign and malignant breast conditions
  • Experience in oncoplastic techniques such as therapeutic mammoplasty and reconstruction
  • Excellent practical skills in the full range of breast clinical problems
  • Good understanding of the management of breast disease

Desirable

  • Specific educational interests and evidence of educational ideas or project work.
