This post represents an exciting opportunity to join a group of dynamic Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons in providing a wide range of elective orthopaedic services and trauma services to the population of approximately 400,000 in the Wakefield and Kirklees area of Yorkshire. The successful candidate will join 23 other Consultants and 7 Specialty Doctors and 14 Resident Doctors.

Duties will be based primarily on our Trauma Unit (Pinderfields General Hospital, Wakefield) site and Elective Orthopaedic Surgical Hub (Pontefract General Infirmary) - although all our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites.

Main duties of the job

Working as part of the Orthopaedic team to provide a comprehensive service including general adult and paediatric orthopaedic trauma.

Provide continuing clinical responsibility for patients under his/her care.

Provide evidence based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.

Contribute to undergraduate, post graduate, and multi-professional educational development with higher educational qualifications desirable.

To promote equality and diversity actively and encourage colleagues to do the same.

Take an active part in continuing medical education including providing clinical training for junior staff and undergraduate students.

Contribute to a 1:16 on-call commitment providing Urgent and Emergency Care, therefore it is essential to demonstrate active commitment to the management of trauma.

Deliver a comprehensive Foot & Ankle Surgical service, including elective day case and inpatient surgery, routine and complex trauma surgery, and out-patient assessment, investigation & treatment. Therefore its essential to evidence fellowship level Subspecialty Foot & Ankle training.

Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 10 PA timetable. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidate and changing requirements of the service.

o Examples may include formal teaching responsibilities or departmental leadership roles.

For this post direct clinical care (DCC) (work relating directly to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of illness) includes theatre work, pre and post-operative visiting, emergency work, outpatient pre-assessment activities, and administration directly related to the above, day time and out of hours. All sites are supported by a crash team, have an established escalation policy, and out of hours cover at all sites. There is also a transfer policy in place for deteriorating patients, and when consultants are sick or on leave, care is handed over to the acute or on-call team for any urgent matters arising. Additionally, surgeons are contactable via switchboard during normal working hours for non-urgent matters, and on call teams are available at all times for out of hours advice and management. Furthermore, there is a senior ward round so all patients are reviewed daily and at the elective site have an ACP model for continuous post operative care 24/7.Supporting professional activities (SPA) (that underpin direct clinical care) include participation in training, medical education, continuous professional development, formal teaching, audit, clinical management and clinical governance activities.
