The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust is looking for a Specialist Optometrist, with a specialist interest in Macular, Medical Retina & Paediatrics to join our amazing team of 8 Consultant Ophthalmologists, 10 Doctors, 2 Specialist Optometrists and 4 Orthoptists.
We see around 70,000 patients a year in our three outpatient clinic areas, providing a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options. We are constantly looking at ways to improve services and the high quality care that we provide to our patients. We support development and innovation.

This is a full time post but we flexible and would welcome a job share. We are a three site Trust and the successful candidate will be expected to work across site in line with service demand.
Main duties of the job
To deliver a comprehensive range of core and specialist optometric services, specifically in the area of medical retina to the highest standards of quality and care.
To work closely with the Consultant Ophthalmologists, participating in macula and medical retina clinics. in order to diagnose and co-manage patients with age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy/maculopathy and retinal vascular occlusion.
To deliver intravitreal injections following formal training and competency assessment.
To help in recruitment and assessment of patients for various clinical trial following the Good Clinical Practice principles of research.
To work as an autonomous practitioner in accordance with professional and regulatory body guidelines, codes of practice and statutory Trust requirements.
To follow departmental guidelines, protocols and group decisions.
To undertake administrative duties as agreed with the line manager ensuring effective service delivery.
To undertake clinical audit as agreed with medical staff and/or line management.
To undertake training and education as deemed necessary by senior colleagues.

To provide highly specialised examination of patients attending the AMO and OMO assessment clinics, so that comprehensive diagnosis, management, education, and discharge of patients can be made.
To work alongside and under the supervision/direction of consultant ophthalmologists in the medical retina treatment clinics, undertaking sessions as an Optometrist Injector as required (once competency is achieved).
To provide an extended and highly specialist optometry service, diagnosing and managing patients with AMO and OMO. This will involve detailed examination of patients' fundus and media, interpreting Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Fluorescein Angiograms (FA) and other diagnostic tests to enable full diagnosis and management plans to be made.
To undertake core optometry services when required (i.e., refraction and advice on visual impairment), so that full diagnosis is reached, and management can be planned accordingly.
To explain all findings to patients in a tactful and sensitive manner, so that they can be involved in any management decisions to be made.
To maintain accurate, contemporaneous, and detailed records in patients notes of all examinations and treatments undertaken.
To audit services provided to patients as directed by consultants/line management and in accordance with Trust/national requirements, so that services remain effective and relevant to service needs.
To actively participate in departmental research projects and being available flexibly as required.
To be responsible for maintaining own education and training (CET) as required by the General Optical Council by attending meetings, training etc so that registration is continued.
To use IT systems as required by the Trust/department, so that record keeping, and clinical recording of results is accurate and accessible.
To liaise with all members of the Ophthalmology team to ensure that all services are co-ordinated and therefore of a high standard.
To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, Ophthalmologists, Nurses, Optometrists, Orthoptists, Visual Impairment service, Admin staff etc., so that patients receive an effective service.
To manage a caseload of patients, exercising time management skills to ensure that clinics run smoothly and effectively.
