The duties involved are wide ranging and diverse, with main areas of focus including waste, transportation and mobility, buildings, energy, behaviour change, climate resilience, and biodiversity.

The post holder is expected to be adept at managing projects and delivering initiatives within large organisations, and will take a lead role in programme delivery for sustainability linked transformation work at the trust, with a focus on driving forwards all projects that support the delivery of the organisational green plan (midyorks.nhs.uk/green-plan), which covers minimisation of waste, energy efficiency, decarbonisation of heating, transition towards EVs, clinical innovations, partnership working, supply chain engagement, climate adaptation, and improving the natural environment.

About us

We provide care and support to over a million people in Wakefield and Kirklees in their homes, community settings and across our three hospital sites at Pontefract, Dewsbury and Pinderfields (Wakefield).

Always striving for excellence, we are at the forefront of innovation and research, and we invest in teaching and the development of our workforce.

We live by our values of caring, improving, being respectful and maintaining high standards. We listen and learn because we aim to make Mid Yorkshire the best place to work and receive care.

We value diversity and welcome talent and enthusiasm irrespective of age, disability, neurodivergence, sex, gender identity and gender expression, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or other personal circumstances including providing unpaid carers support to someone with a health and care need. As ethnic minority groups, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and people with a disability/neurodivergence are currently under-represented across the organisation, we encourage applications from members of these groups. We have policies and procedures to ensure all applicants are treated fairly and consistently.

We are proud of our staff networks - who offer valuable guidance and feedback from those with lived experience.

We have a clear vision and you could be part of this! If you share our values and you want to make a difference to the lives of our patients and their families and carers, we would love to hear from you.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Form part of a multi-disciplinary team whose role is to provide and maintain a high quality, functional built environment to The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, which serves the needs of the practitioners that deliver healthcare services, primarily across 3 hospital sites located in Wakefield, Pontefract, and Dewsbury.

Contribute to and play a leading role in the trusts overall green plan delivery in respect of both carbon reduction and linked projects relating to other sustainability goals.

Work alongside the trusts energy & sustainability manager to deliver energy efficiency schemes, deep building retrofits (to move the trust towards low carbon heating systems), and on-site renewable energy generation projects, such as solar PV carports over car parking spaces.

Be an agent of transformation and innovation, to embed changes to behaviours and organisational culture and to help implement and normalise sustainability within everything the trust does.

Develop effective systems within the trust for domestic dry mixed recycling (DMR) waste and other waste recyclate streams in collaboration with internal colleagues and other organisations, locally and on a national basis.

Promote compliant and sustainable waste segregation practices and support any campaigns that aim to improve staff adherence to rules and to align with relevant targets, by working closely with operational colleagues to ensure waste segregation is undertaken effectively (and safely), and pre-collection storage is adequate and well-coordinated.

Collaborate with colleagues to record, analyse, and report instances of contamination within waste streams, quantify associated financial penalties, and highlight the worst internal offenders, to try to root out needless cost pressures borne by the trust.

Help raise awareness of all applicable waste disposal procedures to achieve optimal waste prevention, minimisation, and recycling rates by reviewing waste stream datasets against the trusts waste management framework.

Contract manage any commercial arrangements put in place for the collection of recyclates, including performance monitoring of any such agreements, liaison with suppliers, compliance auditing, and participation in any formal review meetings alongside the procurement and facilities departments.

Participate in periodic reviews of the trusts waste disposal policies and practices to propose changes to practices and procedures that improve sustainability within the trust, as necessary.

Support the trusts waste consultant and/or internal specialists to deliver annual audits of waste disposal service providers to ensure compliance with duty of care requirements under Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act and more generally, the NHS-specific Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) 07-01 as well.

Assume an integral role in the delivery of the trusts green travel plan, including any periodic updates that may be required to keep it current and robust, and independencies and interfaces with other key areas, such as car parking, changes made to the way staff work, and advancements within models of care.

Help to chair and coordinate the trusts sustainable transportation and mobility working group, with responsibilities for securing engagement with and involvement of relevant 3rd party partners, such as local authorities, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, and groups such as Sustrans and Living Streets.

Initiate and manage projects to drive positive modal shift change and active travel amongst staff, visitors, and patients.

Work with the trusts fleet team to enact a plan for electrification of vehicles the trust owns or leases, including the corresponding infrastructure required.

Roll-out EV charging infrastructure within trust owned car parks for both staff and patients/visitors.

Liaise with colleagues regarding potential sustainability innovations, carrying out pilot initiatives, and feeding into or leading on new projects in linked areas, with a particular focus on emissions from treatments, resource use circularity, reducing supply chain waste and packaging, and minimising clinical or corporate practices that lead to avoidable waste.

Play an instrumental role in enhancing biodiversity across our sites to help feed into local nature recovery strategies and to link in with initiatives to reconnect people (staff and patients) with nature as part of greenspace-led health and wellbeing projects.

Study and assess our greenspace assets such as trees present onsite to estimate and value the ecosystem services they provide and the natural capital they underpin, using established techniques.

Lead on the trusts work to undertake climate vulnerability assessments and to develop a corresponding climate change adaptation and resilience plan to help minimise and mitigate the effects of future risks.

Play a role in the trusts key operational and strategic working groups as required and provide information/advice on any sustainability-centric queries as one of the trusts designated subject matter experts.

Ensure compliance for sustainability-based projects specifically with all relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, technical guidance, and organisational policies specific to waste, sustainability, and wider environmental issues.

Coordinate and manage the work of the trusts sustainability coordinator, to monitor the implementation of sustainability policies and initiatives and report progress to senior management and stakeholders.

Conduct sustainability assessments with others in the sustainability team to identify areas where the organisation can reduce its carbon footprint, increase energy efficiency, and minimise waste.

Draft and circulate role specific reports, briefings, and plans to senior members of staff as part of internal governance requirements and committees.

Use sound project management principles to deliver discrete projects, and good general organisational techniques to manage business-as-usual workload priorities.

Develop and maintain sustainability reporting systems, including data collection and analysis, and help prepare annual sustainability reports for internal and external stakeholders.

Assist with preparing and submitting data collection returns, as determined by Greener NHS and NHS England & Improvement, such as the Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC).

Maintain effective communication and good engagement with colleagues, to include building good relationships with corporate and clinical managers and users of clinical and non-clinical facilities across the trusts sites, noting that this may be in written or oral format or via regular attendance at working group meetings.

Cooperate with, develop, and maintain good working relationships with external consultants, project teams, and contractors.

Sit on any relevant external working groups or forums, such as the West Yorkshire Health & Social Care Partnerships climate change operational leads network, and any other NHS or public sector groups operating in this space.

Act as lead bid writer for any relevant external funding pots and grants and ensure that the trust has good baseline data in place to underpin any such bidding activities, to maximise the chances of success.

Keep abreast of sectoral developments, legislative changes, and innovations relevant to the post, write briefing notes for senior managers to highlight opportunities/risks and bring departments up-to-speed, and develop business cases and financial models for spend-to-save schemes, as required.

Support the delivery of sustainability-related cost improvement programmes (CIPs), particularly where measures can result in avoided costs, and/or opportunities can be identified for potential income generation.

Play an active role in the organisations corporate partnership with the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA).
