Job summary
An
exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic individuals to join our team
in the busy Cellular Pathology department at Dewsbury District Hospital,
Dewsbury.
The
applicant will carry out duties in a number of areas including; specimen
reception, specimen dissection and main laboratory. Additional duties include
stock control, filing, MDT preparation, equipment maintenance, reagent control
and general housekeeping.
Applicants
for this position must be enthusiastic, self-motivated, highly reliable, and
trustworthy and be able to work to tight deadlines under pressure. You must be
a team worker as well as able to work on your own.
A
good, basic level of education is required that demonstrates a good
understanding of the English language and a good level of numeracy.
Good
verbal and written communication skills are essential along with fast, accurate
keyboard skills. An ability to follow instructions, work under pressure and
demonstrate good manual dexterity will be an advantage.
Hours
of Work: 37.5 Monday to Friday between 08:00 and17:00 hrs.
NOTE:These positions
are support roles and as such, there will be no opportunity to undertake the
IBMS certificate of competence or achieve HCPC registration.

Main duties of the job
The MLAs
is to assist the associate practitioners, biomedical
scientists, expert Practitioners, and consultant Pathologists with their work. MLAs are the main point of contact,
providing the face of the department.
MLAs
perform a range of technical and clerical duties, including:
Receipt of pathology specimens from hospital
staff and patients in a courteous and helpful manner.
Dealing with minor problems that arise.
Ensuring that the specimens and appropriate
request forms are correctly labelled and that specimens are in the correct
container.
Interpreting clinical information on request
forms to ensure appropriate tests are carried out.
Labelling request forms and specimens with
appropriate numbers as required.
Data entry of patient sample details onto the
Laboratory computer system
Performing routine cleaning and maintenance of
laboratory areas and equipment
Disposing of specimens
Checking and maintaining stocks of reagents, solutions,
and consumables.
Dealing with any spillages of noxious and toxic
chemicals and bodily fluids according to standard operating procedures.
Packaging samples for transmission to other
laboratories and maintenance of records related to this.
Retrieving slides for multi-disciplinary
meetings.
Assisting the Pathologists and the Biomedical
Scientists during surgical cut up of specimens.
Answering telephone and email enquiries
Clerical tasks including printing and filing
reports
Preparation of reagents and consumables

To undertake routine laboratory cleaning duties

preparation as set out in procedures for high risk samples.
To ensure that the specimens and appropriate request forms are
correctly labelled and that specimens are in the correct container. If not, to take appropriate actions as set
