An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified, HCPC registered candidate to join the Mid Yorkshire Pathology Team as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, working in the Microbiology Department based at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield.
The post holder will be a part of a team of Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants delivering a high quality Microbiology service.
The post holder will undertake laboratory investigations as appropriate to their banding and competencies.
The post holder will participate in all quality activities and be expected to attend departmental meetings on a regular basis.
The post holder will be required to train/teach staff of all grades within the scope of their competencies.
The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities to comply with national standards e.g. UKAS.
The post holder will be required to carry out complex trouble shooting of equipment and results.
The post holder may be required to deputise for senior BMS.
The post holder may be required to mentor/supervise staff undertaking their IBMS registration or specialist portfolios.
Main duties of the job
The ideal candidate must have a wide experience of all aspects of general microbiology diagnostic testing.
The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and the desire to provide a service of the highest quality.
The candidate will have had previous experience working in a clinical laboratory and will have completed (or be about to complete) the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology, be a team player and have an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of general microbiology diagnostic testing including microscopy, plate reading, antibiotic susceptibility testing, CL3 work, molecular microbiology, mycology, and serology.
The successful applicant will support teaching and development of all staff groups in the department, as well as participate in all aspects of quality management to assist UKAS accreditation. You will be expected to support the Band 7 BMS staff and be an integral part of the team to ensure the provision of a high-quality professional service.
The successful applicant will also assist with delivery of training, competency assessments, participate in audits and assist in the supervision of more junior staff.

To carry out a broad range of scientific and technical work within the department as required by senior biomedical staff, including that of a specialist nature, working within Health Professions Council standards of proficiency for Biomedical Scientists.
To carry out testing on a daily basis on a range of bodily fluids and tissues many of which may be highly infectious and extremely unpleasant.
To deal with any spillages of noxious and toxic chemicals and bodily fluids according to standard operating procedures.
To evaluate suitability of samples.
To identify anomalous results and take appropriate action.
To carry out a range of specialist technical tasks using highly developed analytical skills. The tasks will depend on the area in which you are working and could include:-
Authorisation of test results.
Undertaking the training of nursing and other staff who carry out ward based testing.
Checking quality control and dealing with maintenance issues for equipment.
Training staff within the department to carry out certain specific tasks, e.g. Mycology.
Interpretation of microbiological cultures and test results to produce an accurate result.
To work independently as required by managers, either as part of the out of hour's service provision or during the normal working day.
To follow the quality control procedures as set out in the departmental instructions.
To attempt to solve analytical and technical problems and failures encountered while working independently.
To interpret clinical information on request forms to ensure appropriate tests are carried out.
To carry out technical validation of assays and investigations based on assessment of quality control results and to produce reports for clinical validation as appropriate.
To work accurately and precisely in a conscientious, disciplined and flexible way.
To maintain high technical standards and ensure that such areas in which you work are kept clean and tidy.
To carry out routine and emergency maintenance and calibration of equipment both inside and outside the department as appropriate.
